VirtualDub opens mp4 files fine for me which I guess is because of the K-Lite Codec Pack which installed the x.264 codec. Problem is the video jerks back and forth so I can't use VirtualDub to convert mp4 files. I tried addiing the MP4 Input Plugin by SEt but then all I get are black input and output screens. So VirtualDub seems to work better without that plugin.

Is there a good free program that can convert mp4 to avi? I tried the 3gp but it has a max resolution of 640x480.

HeyDoYaThang, if use QuickTime input plugin try with other video decoder mode.

MP4 input plugin... well, rather looks as unfinished and abandoned.

QuickTime input plugin use QT components (required installed QuickTime, QTLite or QuickTime Alternative). With autoselect video decoder mode sometime use wrong mode and must set it manually (usually for AVC correct mode is ICM Decomp (mode=3)).

MP4 input plugin use VfW codec (ffdshow VfW or decoder from x264vfw) - also indeed, i have black screen when used this plugin too (even for MPEG-4 Visual).

Of course if have required DirectShow filters (splitter and decoders) can use DirectShow input plugin.

I am using the FLV, MOV Quicktime, MPEG-2, and WMV plugins for VirtualDub. I can see the video and audio of the mp4 files in VirtualDub but the video keeps jerking back and forth. I also have QuickTime Alternative v2.7.0 and Real Alternative 1.9.0 installed.

What do you mean try with other video decoder mode? I have never seen that option in VirtualDub. Where is this autoselect video decoder mode that you are talking about? I would like to be able to just use VirtualDub as it works great for every video type I have tried so far except for mp4. But if I can't get it to work then I guess I will have to use another program.

Really?
Read Quicktime_ReadMe.txt file?

Can edit Quicktime.ini.
Or... when open video file set Ask for extended options after this dialog and in next step can change import options.

Ah I never knew about that. Anyways I did that and it still doesn't work. I just tried another mp4 file and it works fine. It is just one music video that causes a problem. So it is working....just not for one video. So I guess the problem is solved....kinda. Thanks for the help.

Edit:

I just tried a couple more files and it is working. It is just one video so there must be something wrong with the video. Anyways it looks like it will work for most files now and you taught me something new. Thanks for the help I appreciate it. smile.gif

Possible.

What happen if try MoviesTask mode?

Can play this file in QuickTime Player (of course if have installed)?
Also, can play this file throughout DirectShow (used WMP for example)?

I tried all modes on the video and some options the video is jerky and others give me some error message. If I use the Movies Task option there are only 2 frames in the video instead of thousands.

Yes I found a few different versions of the video and I downloaded a few of them and they all work fine. So it was just a problem with that one file. Just my luck the first mp4 file I try was damaged in some way lol. Well it is all working now. Thanks for the help once again. Thought I would just let you know it was only that one file. smile.gif

Well, so I need to write the source code or somebody help me to write it. Do you know who can do it for me? I have 3 months maximum to present my final work.

Aside from the code, you have to make some thinking. How will the plugin indentify that this is a break and it should set the start point and how it will identify that the movie has started to set the end point? I don't know about your country, but here in Greece most channels just cut to ads without any transition effect and they start the movie again. If you have a look at the commercial interval you may see just a single black frame before the commercials begin, but this is not always the case. Also some channels may show their logo full screen for a few seconds just before fading in (from black) to the movie, but this is not the rule. Most of the times they just start commercials and the movie without any effect. Even a human doing the montage has to search frame-by-frame to spot the appropriate in and out points. As for a "special signal" that indicates commercial break this is a joke! No channel uses it, not even the state ones. So before start writting code you have to find the logic to identify the commercials. However I believe that if it is successful or not is of little matter as long as you demonstrate some code to the examiner. Good luck.

I just thought of something it might work! Assuming the movie is 2.33:1 in letterbox format and the commercials are 4:3 or 16:9, you could write a code that checks the widht of the black bars. When a change in aspect ratio (bars width) is detected it should be commercials. So it should set the in point at the first change of aspect ratio. The end point should be set as soon as the original aspect ratio resumes, so it will know that these frames (selection) is commercials and should be removed! I hope that helps. Pity I'm not a good programmer, so I cannot help you with the code.

P.S.: I want to reply to the guy who asked about making a VirtualDub plugin for his examination, but the reply keeps being port here instead! Weird!

I created a video filter called "Afterimage". This generates afterimage effect, a kind of motion blur effect also known as "light trail" effect. Useful for time lapse movie of night skies, especially meteor showers: with this filter, meteors will fade to disappear, instead of being shown only in single frame. It is also possible to generate star trails.

Thank-you for pulling this together, and thanks for writing the filters. I'm an amateur "footler" (I footle about with bits of video) so I couldn't hope to write filters myself, or even work out what I'd want a filter from. This informative forum means I can work out what I need (or download all of them).

Why did i write this "pointless" post? Because it's easy to forget to say "Thank You" and I think you deserve it

Hi,
there are 2 input plugins available for direct input of FLV files:
* Flash Video (FLV) (by fcchandler)
* Flash Video (FLV) (by Moitah) => superceded by fcchandler's one
I tried both of them with some FLV movie clip:
fcchandler's => audio and video were not synchronised;
Moitah's => audio & video synchronised properly but video was skewed to the left.

Probably a combination of good parts from both plugins would give a good result.
Thanks
