Hello !
Is it possible to add subtitles on an Xvid movie using VirtualDub and Subtitler without loosing the quality (picture and AC3-sound) of the movie ?
Could anyone please tell me how ?-Or give me a link of a "How to"-page.
Thank's.

As i said on numerous occasions here, encoding subtitles into the picture is not at all a good solution IMHO. The encoded picture may never be used for any other language without having to watch the subs all the time .. annoying !
Every good player ( BSPLayer, Zoomplayer, TCMP ) will allow you to load external subs files and there are new container formats on the way aiming to replace AVI that will even allow you to mux the subs streams into the file ...
-------------------- Visit the unofficial Virtualdub support forum on http://forums.virtualdub.org - help to reduce the big number of emails Avery Lee is getting every day !! Support matroska as container and Gstreamer as the only truely open, x-platform multimedia platform .... |

The problem is not the subtitles overlaying the picture. The problem is: How do I add subtitles without re-encoding the movie and sound using Subtitler ?-Is it possible if I do not want to use the palyers you mentioned ?
Best regards

Short answer : no
Long answer :
Virtualdubs subtitle filter can not be used to mux subtitle streams into an existing AVI. It will only allow you to kind of 'add' subtitles to the picture if you are reencoding a movie. The subs will become a part of the picture then, and can never be removed ( unless you are using other filters and reencode again, degrading quality further and leaving strange coloured fields where the subtitles used to be ).
Actually, the incapability of AVI to hold subtitle streams in one file together with video and audio, was one of the main reasons ( amongst others, like missing support for VBR audio ) to start development of the MCF container about 2 years ago. While Tobias Waldvogel's OGM implementation based on Ogg does allow even this already today, the MCF project was suffering from a project fork, resulting in 3 projects with similar goals now :
OGM matroska MCF
IMHO its just a question of time until we will finally be able to stop using AVI, once one of these containers gets wide spread use, is documented properly and fully editable/usable in Virtualdub !!
Read more about these new A/V containers aiming to replace AVI in the 'new A/V formats' section here, in the 'Important links' thread ...
Christian
BTW : The developers of the VirtualdubMod project are investing a lot of their free time into adapting new container formats in their excelent modification of Virtualdub, and it will even allow to add subtitles to OGM files today ....

I think you just listed the reason why they will not be widely used anytime soon. Even though I can see the advantages of moving to a new container, as long as you intend to fight a spec-battle, there is no real progress.
I'm not pointing fingers, but only pointing out to you that having three different specs, makes me (as a developer and as a user) skip all three, and only support the one most widely used (AVI).
You might have a better chance of commercial support if you had _one_ format. |
