I was wondering if anything like this exists.

I would like to use virtualdub as a guide to take live action video and re-create it in a 3d environment. I was wondering therefore if there is a filter that would produce the onion-skinning guide feature many animation and stop motion programs use.

here is an example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion_skinning

basically a filter that would output the original frame, in addition to a ghost or 'grayed-out' image of the previous frames or key-frame and maybe the next keyframe.

if nothing like this does exist, how hard would it be to create it?

any ideas, suggestions or advice is appreciated
