Hi, I'm looking to recreate a color effect like the one used in the movie 300.
Something like this: http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6952/01if2.jpg
How can I do this in Virtualdub? Which virtualdub filter should I use (and which parameters should I set)?
Thanks. |

Hi.
It's not exact way, it just way to play...
First filter for partial desaturate, for example:
VirtualDub.video.filters.Add("RGB Equalizer(2.11)"); VirtualDub.video.filters.instance[0].Config("°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±?°?°°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±Ú°°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±¸±°´°±²´°±²´°±²´°±²´°±²´°±²´°±²´°±²´°ÁÒ´°±²´°");
Second for play with color, for example:
VirtualDub.video.filters.Add("RGB Equalizer(2.11)"); VirtualDub.video.filters.instance[1].Config("°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±è°°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±Ü±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°°°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±¾±°±°±à°°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±°±¶±·±°´°±²´°±²¼°±²´°±²´°±²´°±°¼°±°´°±²´°ÁÒ´°±²´°");
Sorry. Symbols ° must be replaced on hex byte B0.
I have a decision. Copy and paste in hex editor and save as settings.vcf: 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
Then load it as VirtalDub processing settings |

Sorry but I have troubles using this method to generate the .vcf file.
I converted the hex string in this site (http://www.vortex.prodigynet.co.uk/misc/as...ascii_conv.html) and I pasted it into a .vcf file. But when I open it in Virtualdub, it quits with no messages.
Maybe some extended ascii value didn't convert well...
Could you please publish the .vcf file somewhere? (e.g. on www.sendspace.com)
Thanks! |

Played around a bit - here is my take on it:
Download the latest beta version 1.24.2 of the gradation curves filter: http://members.chello.at/nagiller/vdub/index.html
Here's the vcf: http://www.sendspace.com/file/43f6a8 (uses HSV curves and the brightness/contrast filter) If you play a bit with the settings you could even enhance it more. Adding some grain with a grain filter (thread "film look for DV" on doom9) could enhance it even more, depending on your source.
Edit: Flaxens noise filter can be used to add grain:
Use an effect intensity of 2 or 3
Maybe I've set the brightness in my settings a bit too dark/contrast too high - depends on your source. Tried it on some of my DV stuff there it worked fine - for some darker TV capture the brightness was set too dark/contrast too high. |

Color-correcting a movie can be quite a sience. Either you know exactly what you are doing, then VD-Filters are perfectly okay, or you need a propper videoediting software. They offer various helping tools to archive various effects.

1. Grab Emiliano Ferrari's excellent BLEND filter (which should be implemented as an internal filter for Virtualdub). http://emiliano.deepabyss.org/
2. Use it to create a blendchain: BLEND [Store] BLEND [Swap] BLEND [HARDLIGHT 100%]
3. Insert a grayscale (or colorize) filter between the first chain: BLEND [Store] Grayscale BLEND [Swap] BLEND [HARDLIGHT 100%]
... And there you go. The '300' film uses a subtle sepia toning (among other things) to warm up the image.
Here's a quick screenshot:

I'm using Bugs' Gradation Curves to give it that old film toning, placing the Gradation Curves right after the Grayscale filter.

Hey loadus!
Looks like you're on that film style mission I was on years back. Anything intreasting you made? Always intreasted in what other filmakers are upto!
Any chance of some raw sample footage about 2 mins or so (xvid, what ever..) you could up? Then maybe we could try the film style look.
Intreasting procedure you used to do the car there. Instead of using grayscale, I would have used colormill or RGBequalizers destauration instead and in only certain parts of the lights and darks. Then add the gradation like you.If you up some footage, I'd give it a go.

If bugs added a way of importing other Satuartion curves that smartcurve or photoshop can produce (HSV,HSB, etc etc)you wouldn't need the gray scale filter or rgbeq or colormill at all. ONE FILTER WOULD DO IT ALL!
Saw a post about which filters should be converted to 64bit, even though i'm no usig 64bit, I thing gradation curves is a candidate

heri | Hey hey.
Check this .fx script for GPU Filter: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...7&t=14597&st=15
This was really a dream come true, I'm currently doing all of my color correction using .fx files.

seen that, very nice!
Now we need like a standard piece of DV to be upped so we can hack at it. and get a result.

hey can your new method, do the ones below? I did that in regular virtualdub.
FIRST IMAGE IS THE ORIGINAL, LATER IMAGES VIRTUALDUB MAKEOVERS.
ORIGINAL...

VIRTUALDUB CORRECTED....

Is your new method/workflow faster in reproducing above results?
