After nine months of suffering from dropped frames from VCR I found there are two solutions.

(1) Increase the frame size because the sync signal is a function of the frame size. At 480x576 I dropped hundreds. At 720x576 I dropped only one or two.

(2) Buy a Time Base Corrector. I have just bought an AVtools AVT-8710 from dvdirect.com for $170.00. Its made by Cypress in Taiwan as the CTB-100 but badge engineered under other names. It comes with a proc amp and comb filter which automatically cleans up the signal somewhat. Using it makes life so easy it almost takes the fun out of it.
