a video i want to encode has subtitles embedded in it. it is a 16:9 aspect ratio video and the black bars on top and the bottom are not visible when i open it in virtual dub
the problem is that how to make the bars visible so i can apply a fill fileter over the subtitles which is embossed on the black bars itself...
meaning the subtitles doen't occur on the video itself.
thank you! |

Hello.
I don't understand. If the black bars are not visible in VirtualDub, then neither are the subtitles (??) So it sounds like you want to add your own black bars? If so, use the Resize filter with "Expand frame and letterbox image."

Thanks man...
the black bars are not visible in virtual dub. however when i play the movie in my video player software (ATI File Player) which technically works the same as windows media player... the black bars are visible
the problem here is that i want to see the black bars in VirtualDub so that i can remove the subtitles which are superimposed on the black bars itself. alternatively you all can give me another method to remove the subtitles. i would be very happy since i have exhasuted all possible alternative.
i'll try ur method now. thanks again. |

the black bars do not exist in the actual file, the video player is adding them, and then adding the subtitles from an external (or inline) source, you need to first expand the video the way fcc mentioned, then you need to use a subtitling filter to insert the subtitles seperately. someone else add how to get the subtitles, cause I don't work on them enough (at all) to know how exactly.

What I'm getting is that it sounds like you want to add and then remove something that isn't visible in VirtualDub in the first place; this makes no sense to me. Could you draw us a picture or something?
What do you get if you set Video and Audio to "Direct Stream Copy" and save a new AVI? Does the new AVI have subtitles?

As I understand, tifosi has a movie without black bars and subtitles. When he is playng movie, he has subtitles on the black bars. As examle, VobSub filter can work just on this way. But tifosi wants to get of titles. His idea is to make these bars visible in VDub and fill them by black color.
But it will never work, because file itself haven't bars ans subtilles already. VDub can't change here anything - it can't remove or overwrite not existing things. All these subtitles are coming from outside during playing - probably from external subtiles file, and are added by player.
Just check, if you have also some additional file with the same name as your avi but with different extension (like *.sub or *.txt or *.ssa). If so, it's file where these subtiles are coming from. Just remove this additional file and your problem will be solved. |

wow. this works. but could valja explain why the subtitle file is linked to the avi file since i am using an ordinary video player with no support whatsoever for the subtitles?
and to the guys who tried to help. thanks alot! i appreciate it greatly. |

Transmux your file into a .ogm with http://sf.net/projects/virtualdubmod and install the OGM Dshow filters from http://tobias.everwicked.com ... every Dshow absed player should allow you now to select/deselect the subtitles on playback .... so you cna leave them in the file, without having to add black bars to the movie ...

I've also fooled around with ATI's File Player, but I wasn't aware of anything like this being possible. How does it work, I wonder?

Subtitles from external files are shown or by player itself (like bsplayer) or by additional active video filter (like VobSub active filter).
You have probably installed some codec pack (I suspect some of Nimo packs) where VobSub is included. In this case when you start video, VobSub checks if there is subtitle file with the same name as video file (between file name and extension can be additional info about titles). If there isn't such subtitle file, VobSub exits. In other case it starts showing subtitles.
You can have different subtitle files for the same film. Say, if you have film.avi, there may be subtitles like
film.sub film.ENG.ssa film.finnish1.sub film.finnish2.sub
With Windows MP 6.4 you can easily control subtitles: "Play" -> "Language" and there choose subtitles you want or just turn them off. Later WMP-s haven't such control. |
