Computer Restarts During Encode Or Capture

Every time I use virtualdub to encode an mpeg to avi with divx and mpeg layer 3, or capture it restarts my computer.

I have an AMD T-Bird 900, Sound Blaster Live!, MSI nVidia gForce 2 Ti 64DDR, under Win XP.

I tried alot to get this fixed. I am pretty sure it is video, and not the audio that is doing that. My video card is 4x AGP, and I am unsure if my main board can handle that. The PC has a history of spontaniously restarting, but while encoding, it happens everytime. It used to work by the way, and under the same conditions too.

Sorry for the long post. I am just giving you guys something to work with.

I'd guess that your processor is overheating, or you have an underpowered power supply, or both. Take the cover off your computer and leave it turned off long enough to get cold, then turn it back on and point a fan into the case and try capturing again. If that fixes it, you need some more fans in your case. If it doesn't, what wattage power supply do you have?

If you have more than one AGP slot, try your AGP card in a different slot.

huh.gif There are computers with more than one AGP slot?
I always thought the AGP device bus only supported one device and that was an early problem with having muti-monitor displays.

Use the Matroska file format

I guess I don't know much about AGP. ph34r.gif

In that case, how about trying the PCI cards in different slots?

My power supply is 300W max. Just changed it from 125W. Don't know how the computer ran with that for so long.

I do not have a second AGP slot, and I would have to agree with jcsston on there not being more then one per motherboard. Mine can barely handle what I have on it. I have tried mixing around with PCI, but no luck.

I also tried mixing up my ram. That worked on not restarting much anymore, but video encoding restarts everytime. It could be that stick with no label on it. I got it as a 128mb SD Ram, but maybe it is pc 100, and doesn't work with the other 256mb pc 133, and 128 mb 133.

I can see how overheating may be an issue, and I will try cooling it more, but it used to do this with no problem even after downloading all night. The T-Bird is a slot processor, and has a huge heatsync, and little fan on it. Overheating was never an issue. *also there is a case fan.

I changed drivers for video card to newer, same thing. I had to assume it was a video to motherboard issue.

Thanks

Well you can allways Upgrade your Mother Board and Proscessor to something like an ASUS Board and a Athlon XP 1800+ for not much more than $100-$150 on EBay..I just got a New P-4 2.4ghz and an Asus Board for Under $200 on EBay and Put in in an old case with a small Hard drive and basicly the bare essentials to make a working PC and sold it for $800..

I fixed the problem. Pf100 was on the money. It was the processor overheating. For reasons unknown I got a crazy idea to open the case while the pc was on and behold... the processor fan stopped turning. Burned out. From the looks of it, more then a week ago. Pain in the a* to find a fan to fit slot processors, but I got one. Everything works.

Thanks all. I really appreciate the support. I will be lurking around the board offering help where I can provide it. Peace.

I hadthis problem. It seemed to happen whever i tried to do full proccessing on an mpeg file. If i do a fast recompress to and avi i can then later to the full proccessing to add filters.

Which is a hassle to say the least. I do 4 pass divx5.03 encodings. so doing 8 passes to rencode and mpeg and crop it is alittle time consuming, espically since i have a list of 50 of them to do it to.

but until mpegs have more stable ion virtualdub, not much i can do. not to many programs allow you to crop the easily wihtout resizing.
