I will be getting a Flip ultra HD camera and the video dimensions will be 1280 X 720.

I figured out how to use the resizer to resize and crop to aspect ratio to get smaller video dimensions with some sample Flip videos from Vimeo, This will crop out parts of the video of course. My question is:

If I want to downsize the video, say from 1280 X 720 to 640 X 480, Actually 848-858 X 480 , is there anyway to shift the cropping around to keep the subject or desired framing within the cropped frame? Serge's plugin for dynamic cropping comes to mind here. Kind of like a pan and scan function but only left/right mainly to keep emphasis on the subject or a part of the scene that is important.

My reason for doing 4:3 or 3:2 versions from the Flip video is so to have more image shown on full screen and it would also make my videos faster in buffering for web playback. Of course I can always downsize from 1280 X 720 to 640 X 360 for faster web playing.

I was learning through sites and on youtube on how to change 4:3 to 16:9 and vice-versa. It is now the moving of the cropper within the frame I'm trying to figure out.

Vegas might be able to do this but not sure about Vdub? I tried an idea and figured it wouldn't work but tried it anyway and that was to use multiple null transforms and blend them for curve editing to get different positions of cropping but as I had thought, that doesn't work.

I don't think there is any pan and scan filter for VirtualDub. I don't know how the dynamic cropping mod works to be honest.

There is no way to record 4:3 on the camera itself? That would save a lot of trouble. smile.gif

No there isn't. The Kodak models have that feature but will drop you down to VGA resolution and I had been hearing about flaws in some of Kodak's products that had stopped me from buying a Kodak brand.

Sample from an Ultra HD Flip:

I won't be diving underwater but I thought the quality looked pretty decent.

There are a lot of people who can't play this video smoothly. This is what got me to think about cutting the video dimensions in half for my own videos for web viewing.

I asked a friend of mine who has cable and he tells me he can't play most of the HD videos smoothly.

I think as long as ISPs throttle bandwidth, HD will not be workable with a lot of people. Plus from what I have read, the way the internet has been since it's inception that it wasn't designed with handling bulk content in mind and viewing HD material could require a huge overhaul of the whole net.

I was able to hunt down a plugin by Donald Graft called "pan" which might be able to move to a desirable part of a frame within a larger window. Comnined with the zoom plugin by the same author , it looks like my idea might be doable.

Crop the video to 4:3 or 3:2 but keep the 16:9 AR then use the pan plugin to get the needed composition for the 4:3 or 3:2 within the 16:9 video.

There is a pan and scan plugin by Trevlac but his site seems to be unavailable at this time.

Web page I found the Pan and zoom plugins:
