Alright, I'll try to simplify this as best I can. I'm using a series of programs to try and rip and burn a DVD (I just want to copy it for my own use, not to sell or anything). I'm using instructions from DVD Wizard.

I first used Smart Ripper 2.41 to rip the DVD's vob files.

I then used DVD2AVI 1.77.3 on the vob files and got the wav file and the dv2 project file.

I used VFAPIConvEN to convert the dv2 to an AVI file. It is only about 8Mb large, but that is how large the instructions said it should be (between 8 and 10Mb).

The next step was to use VirtualDub (I have version 1.4.9) to open the AVI file, but when I try to do this it gives me the error message "Cannot determine file type of" and lists the file (filename.avi).

Does anyone know why it does this and what I need to do to get VirtualDub to open the file?

Thanks

Sounds like you need to re-isntall VFAPI. I haven't used it ina while but i'm not sure. Another way to get vdub to open your vob files is with an .avs file. You can use gordian knot to generate the avs file for you if you don't know how. Just install GK(you can get it from doom9), open the d2v file with it. Then at the preview window hit the button that says "Save and Encode", and at the next window just hit save, and it will give you an avs file. Don't mess with the settings if you plan to do all your filtering with virtualdub. I hope this helps.

I downloaded and installed VirtualDubMod and the DLL files and other software required to make it work. The first time I ran it it listed some of the codecs I had installed (Angelpotion for one, and it said Angelpotion was poorly written.) and some other codecs. It said that some of these codecs might even cause another program to be unable to open AVI files. I don't know if it was just talking about players being unable to open AVI files or if it was talking about VirtualDub. Anyway, I uninstalled Angelpotion, all of my DivX codecs, and Nimo codec pack. The program didn't list them the second time I ran it so I don't know if I uninstalled of of them that it had mentioned.

Anyway, uninstalling these didn't make any difference, and even VirtualDubMod comes up with the same error message when I try to open the AVI file. I'd like to get this to work the way it's supposed to. Any other help would be much appreciated. My computer's specs are listed below.

Win XP Home
Pentium4 2.53Ghz
IWill P4R533 Motherboard
512Mb PC1066 RDRAM
60Gb Western Digital 7200 HDD
GeForce4 Ti4600 128Mb Video
SoundBlaster 5.1 Audio
16x DVD-Rom, 40x12x40 CD-Rw
250Mb Zip Drive

Built by me

Something else I forgot to mention. When I try to open other avi files (such as ones I've downloaded) they open fine. It's just the one made by VFAPI that doesn't open. Also, Streak, when you mentioned that I may need to reinstall VFAPI, I'm not sure what you mean, as this program doesn't install, it just runs from its directory.

Thanks again

VFAPI should come with these files:
VFAPIConv-EN.exe
VFCodec.dll
vifp.inf
vifpset.bat

Vifpset.bat installs the codec file on your system, it sounds like you havn't run this.

I wish it were that simple, but that's the first thing I ran and it installed fine. Sorry I misunderstood you, I thought you were talking about the program itself and not the codec.

Nobody uses VFapi anymore. AVISynth is much more matured and powerful. Download 'The Gordian Knot' from www.doom9.org, it will give you some very powerful options based on Avisynth to open and encode VOB files.

I got an error in Windows XP and had to reinstall my OS. After reinstalling it the program worked without any problems. I'm thinking it wasn't working because of one of the codecs I had installed.
Thanks for your help.
