I have a Canon camera which takes passable video. I thought this would be very useful until I found out the it was only viewable with Quicktime. I would like to be able to include video clips from this camera in DVDs that I'm making for family, but none of the tools I have will accept the AVI format. My searches for info have lead me here. I just can't figure out how to use VirtualDub to convert the files into something useable. I have tried GSpot to figure out what codec etc. but it says it is "mjpg" but can't "render" the file. And this is where I lose it...... Any help appreciated. |

MJPG is Motion Jpeg - you need a codec for that. I donīt know any links offhand, so youīll have to search. There should be a few free codecs, at least for decoding.
Didnīt you camera come with any?

I haven't seen any mention of codecs in the info that came with the camera. I thought that Virtual Dub could take an AVI file and somehow change it either into an older or newer version of AVI. I hoped that then Microsoft Media Player, Winamp, and RealPlayer would be able to play the files as they can't now. Only Quicktime works - even though the other say they play AVI. I understand the AVI is only a package and that inside the video and audio are separately coded and one of them must not be what these software packages are looking for. I got gSpot so that I could find out which codec the files were done with. It says: Video 4CC Motion JPEG including Huffman Tables and that there are 3 compatible codecs installed (PICVideo M-JPEG 3 VfW COdec, AVI Draw, MPEG Decompressor) already on my system. Audio: PCM Audio no codec required But then it can not render the file.
I also got DivX, but can not make it change the files so that Window Media Player can play them. (don't know if there are settings that do that.) DivX Player can play the files. Really don't have a clue what I'm doing. Thanks blink.gif

VirtualDub is limited by the number of codecs installed on your system.
Can you open the file with VDub? It should be possible.
If so, Iīd recommend converting it to DivX and MP3.
Itīd be easier if you could formulate a specific question, I donīt know how specific I have to answer, or what you (donīt) know.

Yes I can open the files in VDub. I can even append 2 and output them again. Just can't see anywhere in the controls/options to save the file as another format like MP3 or DivX. My problem is that basic. I just don't know how to use VDub to output another format. The help seems to concentrate on much more sophisticated tasks like altering the video. Sorry to be so thick. Thanks |

Just starting VirtualDub, opening a video file, and File > Save AVI will produce an AVI file that has uncompressed video. I suspect this alone will be enough to work with your other tools. |

Thanks but I've tried that many times. The file still can't be read by Windows Meida Player or RealPlayer or Winamp. In Windows Media Player I get the directed to the message: COD1199: Cannot Play file. Thanks |
