Hi folks,

I'm stumpted. I have some big Mpeg2 captures, one is 6.33 hrs (17g) and the second 7.66 hrs (22g). They are fine, clear, with synched sound, etc.

Im trying to convert them to DivX 5.02 Avi files....to compress them for VirtualDub editing and eventual archival purposes.

I've tried GKnot with mixed results. The first file converted well, but the sound was mesed up. Using other tools I've been able to get a complete MP3 file of the sound at the right bitrate. The audio-free avi file is also ok, but neither Nandub nor VirtualDub can mux these together correctly.

So, #1) any ideas on this? are there Avi or MP3 processing filters which can fix up files which may have glitches in them that keep Nan/VirtualDub from working correctly?

Now the second file has even more problems. Again, I've split off the audio into a working MP3 file, but GKnot/VirtualDub yields an AVI file that on inspection appears empty. 5.4 Gig, but no keyframes or delta frames. Loaded into Vdub it looks blank.

I'm pretty confused. This Mpeg2 source is exacly like the other one, just a bit bigger. Size shouldnt be a huge issue as I'm on XP SP 1 with NTFS.

So, #2) Why would this be and what can I do about it?

I've been trying to do this conversion a bunch of ways over 3 weeks and now I'm stumped.

Thanks,
JH

What softwares have you tried. For my money I would use DVD2AVI and save a project and demux the audio. I would then use AVISynth to frameserve the saved project through Virtualdub. Next for audio I use CDeX to convert the *.MPA files to CBR MP3 with RIFF WAV headers. Then I open the AVI with the compressed video and the WAV with the compressed audio in Virtualdub on direct stream copy. Make sure to set the propper delay and then save the finished file.

In that I've used Gordian Knot, this is exactly what I've done re: video. As I understand it, Gordian Knot is basically a GUI that uses AVISynth to frameserve the saved project through Virtualdub. It worked on one file and failed on the other.

I did extract the Audio using DVD2AVI...I'll look into CDeX. I had tried maving a wav file with Winamp...which worked, and an MP3 file with AudioConvert. However, both of these the resulting files (which play fine on their own) fail to direct stream copy into a new composite Avi file with video using VirtualDub or Nandub....
