When I attempt to open my .avi video file, the following error message is displayed:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

I'm using VirtualDub version 1.10.4 and operating with Windows 7, and any help you could offer would be very much appreciated!

My apologies if this question has already been asked.

Thanks very much,
Shelley

Yep this has been asked before ;-)
Quick answer, you need XVid https://www.xvid.com/download/

Longer answer
Couldn't locate decompressor for format '????' (unknown)
google virtualdub and the ???? or the full error and download the codec/s needed

You'll probably get others including unplayable audio messages, they've all been asked before and you'll get a quicker answer from googling for the answer
Some quick ones
mp3, ac3 and aac are in my sig below ->all fcchandlers stuff
h264/x264 https://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/
FFDShow understands many video formats, (but may need configuring to turn each one on in it's vfw settings) http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/
There are also plugins for virtualdub that let you load mp4/flv/mov etc on this page http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=7&t=19488
FFMpeg plugin is in my sig and lets you load many types of video without codecs etc so that's the simplest
To open the file with a particular input plugin select the file in the open video dialog, then choose the plugin from the dropdown box at the bottom 'file of type'

Thanks so much for your quick reply! Yes, I dug through and finally found the answer I was looking for -- sorry for the repeat!

It's telling me now exactly what you predicted ... "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format. (source format tag: 2000)"

I'll look through the links you've provided and let you know if I still need help.

Thanks again.

Thanks for all your help! I just have one more question ...

I've downloaded the AC3 codec like you instructed (format code: 2000 in the error message), but I'm unsure how to proceed. I've tried dropping the plugin into the plugins32 file as per the directions in the readme, hoping VirtualDub would detect it automatically, but to no avail. Can you talk me through the install process?

Much appreciated!

The ac3 codec is Ac3Acm Codec and you just install that, then virtualdub can use ac3 in videos
The plugin Virtualdub Ac3 plugin is a plugin that lets you add external ac3 audio files to a video
