Hi there,
I am trying to convert some old Hi8 analog tapes to some sort of digital format using my old Sony Handicam and an Elgato USB capturing device. As Elgato's software appears not to work properly, someone suggested VirtualDub. I downloaded and uncompressed the source file for VirtualDub and then I looked for some sort of "readme.txt" file that would tell me what to do next - how to install the program or what exe to run - but no such luck. I have 3 exe files: auxsetup.exe, vdub.exe, and VirtualDub.exe but there is no explanation as to which exe does what and which exe to run under which circumstances. There is no "setup.exe" so I (and, presumably anyone else trying to get started with VirtualDub) don't know how to proceed. Can you help?

1) How to install ?
VirtualDub is not installed via setup.exe nor install.exe.
You have simply to unzip all the files out of the ZIP to for exemple C:\Program Files\VirtualDub.
Take care to also unzip the subfolder \plugins32.

2) How to start VirtualDub ?
You can start the program via VirtualDub.exe

3) What encoders to use ?
- a (Video for Windows) video-encoder, like x264vfw and
> look at this thread for download : http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=7&t=19488 at VFW codecs
> look at this thread for settings : http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=4&t=22100 (see the print screen)
- an audio encoder, like Lame MP3
> http://sourceforge.net/projects/lame/files/lame/
So you will be able to compress video and audio

4) How to capture ?
- please read the first part of the following thread:
http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=6&t=21444
