Hello,

I am a complete newbie to this software and this forum. Hopefully you can help me with my question.

I would like to edit some videos that I captured with my digital camera. The files are in .avi format.

I installed VirtualDub on my computer (Windows XP SP 2, Intel DualCore, 2 GB Ram). When I try to open a .avi file I get the error message

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XXXX" (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player are not suitable."

I tried to follow the instructions documented in the FAQs. I downloaded Codec Packs as offered on the websites. But still I cannot open the .avi files.

What do I do wrong? How can I open .avi files with VirtualDub?

I would appreciate some help very much.

Thank you very much for your efforts in advance.

C.

Check source files used MediaInfo and/or GSpot (what is video codec).
Then search this specific codec - eventually maybe ffdshow VfW supported this codec.

Most Codec Packs just contain DirectShow filters (and sometime few popular codecs).

Just check source files. It's DV video, MJPEG or some other?

Thank you very much for your quick reply to my post.

Your description helped. I solved my problem because I needed a MPEG4 codec.

Thank you very much again!
