Cpu And Encoding Speed....

Just wondering:

1) Frameserving from VDub to TMPGEnc and setting TMPGEnc to "2-pass VBR"....remaining time says, "8hrs". Is that 8hrs until it finishes the 1st pass, or until the end of the full encoding? Also, are both passes the same speed or is 1st past slow and then 2nd pass cranks quickly..?

2) How much does CPU speed affect typical encoding time? I have P31.0Ghz and 9200rpm HD.....w/ a P4 2.0Ghz+ would I see a big difference in encoding time or would it still be loooong?

3) Also, running CPU near 100% (as occurs during TMPGEnc encoding) for 5-8hrs.....does it 'cause CPU damage over time? Or do you just not worry about it? (smell smoke blink.gif )

1. the estimation is for both passes TOGETHER. both of them are approximately the same duration (= more or less 4 hrs /pass)

2. cpu has the most effect on the encoding time. assumming both pc's have at least 128M ram, i'd say that the 2G pc will encode about twice faster.

3. it shouldn't. however, if your cpu is overclocked it will have higher possibility for crash during encoding (again, depends on the ammount of overclocking, cooling etc, you'll just have to try). i don't think it will cause permenant damage though if the cpu is only 'reasonably' overclocked.

Thanks, avih!

Wow, now I'm wanting a P42Ghz+.... rolleyes.gif
Also, thanks for letting me know about the overclocking. Good to know so I don't fry myself.

Don't overlook the AMD line. Anthlon XP provides a massive amount more bang for you bucks. But if you have excess bucks you just want to blow then have at the P4. You might be able to get a FPS or two more with the P4 for the extra 200~400 dollars. Then again it might also be less. wink.gif
