Can anyone tell me what is the meanning of the folowing message:
"The requested Audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format"
I get this message whenever i try to play an AVI file on virtualDub. I can play the file's video but i cannot hear or edit the audio. This happens with almost all AVI files.

let me guess...
you miss an audio decompressor. You said, that you can watch your video content but can't hear anything - hm, ever heard about vorbis?!!
1. To mux video with OggVorbis it is possible to use 'OggMux' (beside 'graphedit' and 'combineaviogg'). If you (or someone) used OggMux then it is possible to name your target file into .avi - .ogm is the way to go but as you can see .avi is possible as well. So, I think that you have a fake avi-file with OggVorbis as audio and you miss the right DirectShow filter to hear the sound. Install OggDS 0.9.9.1 by Tobias Waldvogel and you'll hear sound.
2. once you've reached to play your video with sound you like to open your (fake) avi in vd... and vd complains about the requested audio compression... then nothing weird about it. That's absolutely ok. 'cause vd can't handle OggVorbis.
3. The only way to "play" with your movie is demultiplexing it, to get audio and video into seperated parts.
4. To use vorbis with nandub (a modified version of vd) you must install vorbis_acm but even though (at least I am) you're unable to open your (fake) avi in vd/ nandub
cheers Sill
P.S.: Google will help you to find vorbis_acm and OggDS

I am not 100% sure but this is what i believe happens :
The movies you are trying to 'play' in Virtualdub ( why dont you use a Mediapayer for that BTW ) do have MP3 audio.
As Vdub is using the ACM codec for audio decoding, and not a Dshow filter, and as Windows is only coming with a very limited MP3 ACM codec in terms of bitrate it may well be possible that you dont have a suitable MP3 ACM codec for decoding your audio streams.
You can either buy Fraunhofer MP3 Professional or have a look into the 'forbidden codecs' list here to check what other codecs you are not legally allowed to use

This thread confuses me. Actually VDub shouldn't be able to open fake AVIs ( = .ogm ; that's what OggMux creates ) at all.
@ChrisHJW: The MP3 Codec that comes with Windows is only limited in terms of encoding. But it has no limitations for decoding so MP3 should NEVER be a problem ( except it's VBR ) |

Are you sure here about the ACM codec ?
You are certainly correct about the MP3 Dshow filter thats coming with every Windows installation and will play any bitrate MP3s, but what about the ACM codec ?
Its certainly limited for encoding, maybe also for decoding ?
