Hi, I am new to video capture. I have a camcorder that I am trying to capture video from over an IEEE 1394 connection. My PC is running Windows 2K so I have not installed any specific driver for the camcorder, it just shows up as a Microsoft DV Camera or VCR.
My PC is dropping 5 - 10% of the frames when I do a capture. I have a AMD 900Mhz Athalon, 512Mb of RAM and a 5400 RPM drive that I think is ATA 66 not sure though.
To try and work around the frame drops I wanted to try some different codecs such as huffyuv or DivX. The problem I am having is that in the main virtualdub screen when I look at compression I can see the codecs but in the capture screen all I see when I open up compression is (no recompression: dvsd). Am I overlooking something or is it not possible to select a different codec with a DV device as the source?
Thanks! |

Looks like I found the answer to my question. I thought I would post it in case anyone else is interested. In the case of DV video the encoding is done on the camcorder. A capture program in this configuration simply spools in incoming data to disk.
In my case, I am still not sure why virtualdub and other programs were dropping frames but I found that WinDV works great for me.
