VirtualDub's codec list is simply a list of Windows codecs. Install just about any codec on your system and VirtualDub should find it (as long as it supports VCM/ACM interfaces).

BTW, I recommend against using a codec pack. Instead, decide what codecs you want and download them directly from their home pages.

Thank you, fccHandler. I'm trying to learn how to use VDub through trial & error. The 500mb camcorder strip I ran through came out 4GB large. Guess it needed
recompression through a codec, but that's where my learning curve has peaked
out. Guess there's no such thing as a "universal" one-size-fits-all codec. From
what I've gleaned from my learned companions on this forum is that a processed
video file has to have, and be handled by the same codec from start to DVD player.
How does one choose the correct codec? Thank you in advance ......... shock

If you're taking a few in between steps (resizing and other filtering) its best to use a lossless codec like huffyuv. Note this is only intended for intermediate steps, not archiving (at least archiving for sane people™ wink.gif )

QUOTE (shockman @ Feb 14 2005, 08:28 AM)
from start to DVD player.

If you're targeting a DVD player, you should compress your final video with MPEG-2. There is no codec for that and VirtualDub doesn't support it. MPEG-2 encoders typically aren't free, but you can try TMPGEnc free for 30 days. You'll also need DVD authoring software, and that costs money too.

If you have a DivX-certified DVD player, you can also use the DivX codec.

There *are* free MPEG2 encoders that are fine for authoring DVDs. I'd hesitate to suggest them to a total noob, however.

"FNG" ....... "F---ing New Guy"
Thanks for all the help. I just ran a test clip from Capture thru VCD-RW (with editing) and it was flawless. I used Vdub with huffyuv 2.2.0. "One small step ............"
Thank you again, Gentlemen ....... shock

There actually IS a MPEG-2 codec compatible with VirtualDub, although its a sort of workaround. Try www.ympeg.com.
