Can't Playback Avi's With Ac3 Sound In Vdub

I've got a few AVI's with AC3 sound muxed in them. I can play them just fine with my avi player (bsplayer, radlight, etc.) I can load them fine in Vdub but when I press PLAY it comes back with the following error:

"The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format."

It doesn't matter if I select audio full or direct processing, and I get the same error with all versions of Virtualdub and Nandub. In the file information I see
Sampling rate: 48000Hz
Channels: 5 (Stereo)
Compression: Unknown (tag 2000)

I also downloaded virtualdubmod 1.4.12 with the needed dlls and created a new directory and placed all dlls and executable in that directory (total of 3 zip files) It gives the same exact errors, i.e. it can't playback the avi with this ac3 audio in it using any virtualdub version.

all Vdubs that I tested can save a portion or all the avi and that new avi has the sound in it just fine...

any ideas? All I'm trying to do is sync audio to video. the basic functionality that's missing is the ability to directly playback ac3 stream along with the video (current workaround is to save to temporary file and play it)

Vdub doesn't support AC# audio.
Try using Vdubmod instead.
