When i'm trying to add subtitles they get spread
When i'm saving the file with other compression(not divx) i don't have this problem. |

Probably not enough bitrate. Especially since it´s white on black - I can hear the codec screaming, in it´s pain. ;-)
Try to give it more bitrate - you´re using 2-pass already, right? If not, do so. Also, it might be worth a try to run a smoothing filter over it first. Not enough to blurr, but enough to make the edge not as razor-sharp as it is now. That should help the codec.

Both. First 1st pass, then n-th pass. The second pass(n-th pass) can be repeated. I´d recommend two times. You´ll have to save the avi again to do that, so if you´re filtering, you might want to save the filtering first, use HuffYuv for that, so you don´t lose quality, otherwise it´d take longer than necessary, as the filters would have to do the work each time, even if the video´s "just" being examined(first pass).

huffyuv is a lossless codec (that means you wont lose any quality using this codec, unlike DivX which is a 'loosy' codec) you can find huffyuv on this page HuffYuv is a good codec if youre using filters coz it wont mess up the quality of your file and you only need to use filters once with this codec (what you see is what you get)
afterwards you can encode the file using multipassing with DivX (make sure youve disabled all filters used before), first select 'multipass, 1st pass', afterwards use multifpass nth pass with logfile created... you can choose either to rewrite the logfile or not depending on how much passes you wanna do
id suggest to not rewrite the logfile and see how the second pass works out, this way you can repeat the second pass and adjust bitrate accordingly (higher bitrate for more quality, lower bitrate for smaller filesize)

i think you might have misinterpret what we've said
DivX is having problems with sharp edges or transitions, in this case the transition from white (the subtitles) to black (the bar) so what Cyberman suggested was: give it more bitrate, use 2 passes and a smoothening filter to make the transition a little bit more easy for DivX the problem with smoothenin is that your are smudging the subtitles, so they might become a bit vague or blurry
anyway, the reason for using huffyuv was to put this smoothening filter on, because its a lossless codec. the effect of the filter isnt messed up by DivX that way, which as you can see is already blurring the subtitles by itself (in other words: do one thing at a time)
if you used the smoothening filter already and still get bad results there are some other options depending on what it is you want with the video:
- if you only want to play the video on your computer the best option would be using soft-subs, you just keep your subtitle-textfile the way it is, well, read this you could also go for the matroska format in which you can keep your subtitle track as seperate stream and turn it on and off to your liking, but its a little more complicated and doesnt really add to the above (i do it though )
both options, require no re-encoding at all, which is what you actually want in most cases
- if you want to watch on your DVD player you could try frameserving to TMPGEnc, heres a tutorial for that, it will transfer your files to MPEG1 and will give you about 60 to 70 minutes on a VCD
its not an as good compression as DivX (in filesize i mean), but in my experience it has less problems with subtitles first i tried to encode subtitles with DivX too, but gave up on that. so far, i havent had any subtitle problems with MPEG1
anyway, most of your movies will occupy 2 CD's that way, but hey, thats a small price to pay i think (you can cut MPEG's in TMPGEnc too)
of course, you could also try a different MPEG4-codec if your DVD-player will support that... although i doubt it will give better results

Umm, I think you are all clueless.
To me, the artifacts circled in the screen shot look exactly like the deblocking bug which affects the DivX 5.1.1 decoder. If so, the smeared blocks are not present in the encoded file and it will not help to reencode it! The deblocking bug has been discussed several times on the DivX forums:
Pixelation along vertical surfaces XviD decoding artifacts Deblocking bug remains
The good news is, a fix for the DirectShow decoder was released last month:
New installers & DivX decoder deblocking fix!
AFAIK the VFW decoder (which VirtualDub uses for playback) still has the bug, but the above link describes how to disable its post-processing in the registry.

... hardcoded subs should be legally forbidden ......

i recently re-installed DivX 5.1.1 (2 weeks ago i think) and the post-processing value was set standard at 0, so they have fixed that too, well, they got around it so to speak
