i opened a file in vdub and was checking the information, and the audio codec is listed as unknown (tag 2000). WHich codec is this, and where can i get it? Also, i cant uncompress or recompress the audio, is there any way around that without having a particular codec?

IIRC it is AC3 encoded audio. Apart from that I can not suggest any other things to help that I know would workf for sure.

Loc,
I too had a movie with the tag2000 file header that I could hear no audio through. The search for answers regarding that issue are what brought me here.
After much research last night, I did find a way to play the file and get audio. After reading Neo's post about ac3, I did some looking around and found a codec pack that included an ac3 decoder.

http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html

Unfortunately, I still can't get the file to open up in V-dub with sound, but WMP can play and scroll. You can watch the movie afterward. I'm still searching for a Vdub fix, because I wouldn't want to burn a film that I didn't have a master codec for.

Hope this helps,
E

If WMP can play the file then you may always try to frameserve the movie to Virtualdub using AVISynth and its 'DirectShowSource' command.

If the audio is AC3 ( try to render the file in Graphedit and you know whats going on .. get GE from www.doom9.org ) then there is no way to 'master' the codec in Vdub, there is no such thing as an AC3.acm audio codec. Only nandub and a few other proggies can mux AC3 into AVI by adding a WAV/RIFF header to the AC3 first ....

can't the audio be splitted and then opened with a soft that supports AC3??
Could avisynth be used for this frightening task???
Who knows?..........not me.

If an AC3 dshow filter is installed on this machine it might even be possible to use AVISynth to frameserve the sound ( if it is AC3 ). Best take is to use BeSweet ( www.doom9.org ) or HeadAC3he ( www.everwicked.com ) and transcode the AC3 to MP3 or MP2 ... demux it from the AVI with nandub first ...

i figured this one out finally. thanks for all the help guys. So Virtual DUb has no support for ac3? was that a result of a lawsuit or something or just something that is being worked out in upcoming releases? i used ac3dec to decode the audio to wav and then used tmpgenc to encode into an svcd...so now another question...will this degrade the quality in any way? or is just a compression thing? sorry guys im still learning
