Hi guys,

I'm new to VirtualDub (and these forums), but I want to know what compression settings/codecs people use that give good quality results without taking up too much space.

I've got a very large Minecraft video taken from Fraps (raw .avi) and I want to convert it into a reasonably sized 720p video.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to video compression but can anyone help me out? javascript:emoticon('B)')

Cheers,

X264vfw gives decent sizes/quality

You could try the settings here http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...t=21157&hl=x264 as a starting point

Depending what you want to play it back on you could try these adjustments

Change the preset from medium to a higher one
Pro - smaller file, Con - longer to encode and may not play on portable devices

Change the ratefactor from 25.0 to a bigger number
Pro - smaller file, Con - lower quality

Change the ratefactor from 25.0 to a smallernumber
Pro - better quality, Con - bigger file

Since there is many ways of compression I give you another way.

I always use xvid compression for my .avi files from VirtualDub.
Download the xvid codec from http://www.xvid.org/
In VirtualDub you choose Video/Compression and select Xvid.
It will show here after downloading the xvid codec.
Press configure and chose HD720 or HD1080 in xvid

Target quantizer=4 is OK

Save your video to .avi

Regards

Xvid's fine, but it makes a larger file for the same quality vs x264
