Thank you very much for this forum!! What a great idea. (I have Win7-64)

These seem to be the general guidance suggestions I've found:

- There are decode-codecs, encode-codecs, and decode-encode-codecs - either of which can be DirectShow (DS to be avoided for VD1.9.11).

- Don't install codec-megapacks.

- Codecs can be installed just under Win7 or else just under VD, or both?

- If the codec is an ancient (and therefore nearly universal, like Cinepak) codec that came with Win, leave it installed.

I'm trying to understand but it's very confusing - I'm hoping someone can help on a couple of problems: getting better compression than Cinepak with some magic codec that's at least as universal (among Win** machines); and, how can I test the videos I made short of actually running them on all computers?

What's really weird is that sometimes MediaPlayer will play a movie just fine, but if I embed the movie in PowerPoint, it won't play. I've tried a PowerPoint-specific codec, but it didn't play either. I was even thinking that making PowerPoint -> .pdf with embedded flash videos would work, but it doesn't seem to. You'd think someone would have worked this out by 2011. I wonder if you can save the whole mess as .html and play it through firefox?

First try this http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=7&t=20025 download-unpack the FFInputDriver-v0.1.zip copy the plugin into virtualdub plugins32 folder try load your files. It is still in development and not upgraded very often. Someday it will be better than having the package i mention next installed, if you don't need it's extra filters.

The next package i suggest is the ffdshow_tryouts package. In ffdshow_tryouts install and include virtualdub filter option. After installing ffdshow_tryouts in it's folder will be a ffvdub.vdf plugin. Copy this file to the virtualdub plugins32 folder (or was that into main folder - forget which, try both)

Use ffdshow_tryouts options to configure decoders, encoders and more to your softwares such as virtualdub. In virtualdub video and audio filters (after loaded media) will be the ffdshow plugin. Selecting this for more filters if need them.
