I am very accustomed to using XVID in VirtualDub. I'd also like to use X264VFW.
But I have been scared to death by the "gurus" who say that doing this will corrupt the fundamental multimedia engine built into Win7. These "foreign codec packs" may work fine in WinXP, but it is strongly frowned upon in Win7... so I've read.
And yet, I want to use VirtualDub... and XVid and X264 as compression methods in Virtualdub.
So, should I be fearful and avoid this? Or should I go ahead and install both codecs? I had actually installed XVid in a previous install of Win7, and while VirtualDub did work fine and enable me to create XVID-encoded AVI files as I wanted, it does appear that my Win7 had definitely gotten "broken" (although to be honest, it could have been from other codec packs... and not XVid itself).
Thanks in advance for the answer on both installing XVID and X264VFW in Win7, and the potential risk for damage which would or would not occur. |

You can install both safely, and neither needs to be installed via a codec pack.

But does the installation of these two supersede the built-in Win7 support for these codecs? Which will actually be used to decode files encoded this way... Win7, or XVID/H.264 themselves once they're installed? |

x264vfw is only a VFW codec, so normally it shouldn't be used for decoding (only in VFW appliactions). XviD does have a DirectShow filter, but you should be able to disable it in its config I believe.
Of course, if you actually want to use the Win7 built-in decoders is another question.

The standalone XviD and x264 codecs are superior to the ones that Windows has built in. You should feinitely NOT use codec packs as they tend to be packed full of useless software. Just grab the individual codecs.
