I used to have XviD installed separately and also from different codec packs, so it showed up as an option under "Video\Compression" in VD. Now I have ffdshow installed and no codec packs and I do not see it as an option in VirtualDub. Instead there is ffdshow Video Codec which from what I've learned is connected to Xvid somehow, but that's all I know. I would prefer to have Xvid as an option under "Compression" because I like the fact that it has no restrictions.
Now on to another question, and trust me this is all almost a little over my head. I When the ffdshow Video Codec is selected there's something listed called FOURCC code. Currently it's set "ffds, but I've learned that there is a program to change that...AVI FOURCC code changer. Would you recommend this action or something else? |

Ahh, you've got it a little confused, but it's never really explained very well (Here's my equally bad/confusing explanation)
FFDShow and other codecs like XVid don't really have anything to do with each other
XVid can create XVid videos and decode most mpeg4 videos (XVid, Divx etc) FFDShow is more comprehensive and can create and decode many more formats These include XVid, Divx etc... but it's not the 'actual' XVid
To get XVid showing in the video compressor choices, you have to install XVid (codec packs usually install these, but you can just google for XVid and install it by itself)
FOURCC When the video is compressed, the codec puts it's identification marker in the video Xvid puts 'XVID', Divx puts 'DX50' But ffdshow lets you choose 'ffds' (it's own marker) or XVID, DIVX etc
When the video is played the OS looks at this identifier and says 'hey, who can decode this' Then each codec checks that code against it's list of things it can decode and answers yes/no After the OS has asked each codec, it chooses the best decoder for the job and lets that decode it
Now, if you've used FFDShow to encode the video and let it use it's own 'ffds' marker, then there's a good chance it won't play on any pc that doesn't have FFDShow installed That's what FOURCC changers are for - I could change the ffds to XVID and then play it without installing FFDShow (That's assuming you used an MPEG4 type compression in FFDShow - if you picked something else I'd be out of luck and have to install FFDShow)
FFDShow lets you change the marker it uses from ffds to XVid or Divx for that reason though
So.... just install XVid and use that :-)
Hope that helps, and was vaguely useful

Thanks for the help. To be honest I did not understand everything you were trying to say, but it's not your fault. Some of the wiring has been loose for a long time upstairs, so I just don't always absorb things as well as I used to. I'm just glad we have people like you who can advise and I can then just follow their recommendations without having to ask too many questions. Having said that, Xvid is now installed and popping up as an option in VD. Thank you again. |

Update...Just out of curiosity I uninstalled XVid, because I want to play around with the new filter option that was put in the "Video Choice Options" by ffdshow, "ffdshow Video Codec" and if it works good enough for me then I'll just keep XviD out of there. But I wanted to ask you...if I use the ffdshow codec, when you go into "configure", in the FOURCC drop-down menu, there are several choices, including FFDS and Xvid. What should I pick, or does it not matter? |

It only matters to whoever is playing it back If it's set to ffds then they'll need ffdshow to play it If it's set to XVID then it should be playable by anyone who has divx, xvid of ffdshow installed
