I encoded a short clip for a friend who use to be able to view xvid file but now he can't so I installed Divx to reencode and he was able to view my clips, great.

Now I have the DivX logo showing in my player whenever I play a video. I had installed Koepi's xvid to play xvid files previously. I had to override Divx in MPC-HC's internal Xvid codec to get back to normal again. I didn't see DivX in MPC-HC but I was seeing the logo and the video wouldn't repeat and the video quality was slightly different.

Did installing DivX mess up Koepi's xvid install? I'm also noticing that certain videos won't encode right with DivX or xvid, out sync or stalled up video, freeze frames in random spots for example.

Will this be a case of just simply uninstalling DivX and reinstalling Koepi's xvid again?
What did I do?

It is true that they try to take over decoding the files, and depending on post-processing the decoding can be slightly different. However, this can be configured via Start > Programs and having both installed doesn't cause them stall, go out of sync or break in any other way during encoding.

That's good to know. I was worried for a moment there.

I'll keep DivX in there so I can make those versions for my friend. Strange that he isn't able to play Xvid anymore, just a black screen with sound. I told him if he changed or updated anything and he said he didn't.

He even told me that he was able to play DivX and Xvid through wmp without installing anything to play that format. I never had that experience and had to always install something. I'm thinking someone did install something for wmp to play those files and it was probably who ever helped him set up his computer.

1)
DivX has got an option to show its logo (or not to show) - this is configurable (and it always was).

2)
Most of the XviD builds have got an option to use DX50 fourcc for encoding (and they always had).

How would I check to see if divX is decoding the video and not Xvid? I am using the internal xvid decoder in MPC-HC to make sure I'm using Xvid. Previously, I was using Koepi's Xvid and the MPC-HC Xvid plugin wasn't on.

In DivX settings I don't see an option to disable it for decoding but I do see the logo part you mentioned and there are setting for controlling DivX.

For Koepi's Xvid I couldn't find where to open up the part that you see at the time of install to check the box for Xvid to take precedence over decoding DX50, mpeg4, etc Is that part accessible anywhere? Or do I need not bother?

In MPC-HC?
Play > Filters
Or render in GSpot or GraphStudio.

Has been removed from recent versions (DivX Plus).
Previously available as Support decoding of Generic MPEG-4 video option in Decoder Configuration Utility.
I do not recall that was once option to completely disable decoding (DX50).

Other...
Of course, You can unregister DivX DirectShow filters.
Or... add external DivX filters in MPC-HC and block them.

In decoder configuration (Configure Decoder) > Other MPEG-4 video support.

Thanks Placio

I added DivX to the external filter list and blocked it then that added in the Xvid codec. I was then able to recheck the three types for FourCC support and viola!
