Hi, just some questions regarding the following plugin & codec (both by fccHandler).
ReadMe.txt extracts:
| QUOTE | AC-3 plugin v1.2 by fccHandler The plugin allows you to import most AC-3 audio files in the latest version of VirtualDub. --------- AC3ACM v1.4 by fccHandler This is version 1.4 of an AC-3 ACM Codec for Windows. Basically I've wrapped an Audio Compression Manager interface around the free liba52 [= decoder] library by Aaron Holtzman and Michel Lespinasse, and the ac3enc code [= encoder = compression] by Fabrice Bellard from ffmpeg. This makes it possible to preview, decode, and encode AC-3 audio [means COMPRESSION??] in VirtualDub (or almost any ACM client). |
And here are my questions …
AC-3 plugin - “import” means allows VD (and only VD, and not Windows e.g. for “File info” etc) to recognize, open/load AND also “Save WAV…” of within video streams included AC-3 audio? - Or simply just for “import” /load but not “extract” (“Save WAV…”) of AC-3 audio? Not more nor less?
AC3ACM codec - What exactly means “preview” AC-3 audio and in which context? Does it mean this codec allows VD AND also Windows (e.g. for “File info”) to “recognize” (1st) AC-3 audio? Maybe “recognize” or “detect” is the same term as “preview” in this context, which simply means be able to detect and read file info/header of AC-3 audio … ?
- Does this codec within VD not only allow to decode, but also to ENcode, means allows to COMPRESS AC-3 audio to a smaller file size and let well alone it thereby as real 5.1 sound? IF yes, with which results?
As far as I can understand - IF it is NOT my intention to ENcode (compress) the origin 5.1 sound, I only would need the AC-3 PLUGIN (which allows “Save WAV” too?) - right?
Or do I need BOTH anyway?
Hm, SORRY, I’m really a little bit confused in reagard to this two tools…
THANK’s in advance for some clarification!

AC-3 plugin - just for import AC3 audio (from external file) in VirtualDub.
AC-3 ACM Codec - for decoding (and eventually encoding) AC3 audio in VirtualDub and other programs that use the ACM codecs

No. AC-3 plugin, is only for import from external file. Even if You not encode/re-encode, still need AC3 ACM Codec for decoding (alternatively... current AC3Filter install AC3 ACM decoder (only decoder)).

Not necessarily. AC-3 plugin - need only, if import AC3 in VirtualDub from external file. AC-3 ACM Codec - need, if edit/re-encode AVI (or MPEG) file with AC3 audio.
Preview... mean can decode and 'play' AC3 audio in VirtualDub (and eventually other programs that use the ACM codecs), when press on input/output playback buttons.
Well... few examples...
- edit (just cut and join) AVI file with AC3 audio, without re-encoding (used Direct stream copy mode) - no need plugin and codec; - edit (just cut and join) AVI file with AC3 audio, without re-encoding (used Direct stream copy mode), but with playback audio - need decoder (AC-3 ACM Codec or AC3Filter ACM decoder); - edit AVI file with AC3 audio and re-encode audio to other (example MP3) - need decoder (AC-3 ACM Codec or AC3Filter ACM decoder); - edit AVI file with AC3 or other audio and re-encode audio to AC3 - need AC-3 ACM Codec; - add AC3 audio from external file (Audio from other file... option) - need AC-3 import plugin; - extract AC3 audio to external file - no need plugin and codec - just File > Export > Raw audio... (and eventually change file extension from .bin to .ac3).
Personally... for encoding or re-encoding audio to AC3 - I like to use Aften (used Wav to AC3 Encoder or BeHappy).
