Hello fccHandler,
This is my first post.
Am using: Windows XP SP2 OS on a hp/COMPAQ nx6120 laptop.
Installed the AC3ACM codec by right-clicking the AC3ACM.inf file. In the Add/Remove programs l(currently installed programs) list there is the option for me to Change/Remove the AC-3 ACM codec. However, in Device Manager (Audio Codecs Properties) list and in VDub and VDubMov (Set audio compression) section, the AC-3 ACM codec is not there.
Have Googled for days and no suggestions were successful. Was finally directed to your forum. Understand that you are the author of this codec.
Have an avi file with the original volume too low. When opened in either Vdub or VDubMod and after setting the desired volume changes, then pressing the play button, the error message is: No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source format. (source format tag:2000).
In WINDOWS\system32\ the AC3ACM.acm file is there. When Sherlock - The Codec Detective is used the AC3ACM codec is not in its installed codec list.
Please direct and advise.
Regards. |

@TrevorB:
I have WinXP SP2 also, but I've never had any trouble with AC3ACM on my system, so I don't know why it wouldn't work with yours.
However, your problem reminds me of this thread: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...=ST&f=3&t=10818
(A solution is presented at the end of that thread.)
If anything there helps you, please post back and let me know exactly what did the trick. This problem has come up more than once, but I'm still clueless about what causes it.
Here's another thread that might be relevant: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&t...&threadid=24305

Good afternoon,
Well it is finally working. The threads you suggested provoked the right solution.
(1) Installed AC-3 ACM codec on my home PC. AC-3 ACM codec in Device Manager listing and in Vdub (1.6.17 and 1.71) and VdubMod (1.5.10.2). Used an avi file to test some techniques and all went well.
(2) Proceeded to do a registry comparison of my laptop and PC to determine any differences. Also used the AC3ACM.inf file as a guide. Found that on my laptop the AC3ACM.inf did not write to:
HKCU,Software\Freeware HKLM,Software\Microsoft\AudioCompressionManager\DriverCache
(3) In the registry of my PC at the point HKCU,Software\Freeware the key AC3ACM was missing. But Vdub and VdubMod were there. So added key AC3ACM with its corresponding REG_SZ and REG_DWORD values as from my PC registry.
(4) A comparison was then made with the key values of the audio codices that were both found on my laptop and PC. The REG_SZ, REG_BINARY and REG_DWORD values were the same so it was thought safe to duplicate the PC values for msacm.ac3acm on the laptop.
(5) At the point HKLM,Software\Microsoft\AudioCompressionManager\DriverCache the key msacm.ac3acm was added with its corresponding REG_SZ, REG_BINARY and REG_DWORD values as from PC registry
(6) All of the other values, as per AC3ACM.inf file, were found, and as in the registry of the PC.
(7) Checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32. No blank data values were noted.
(8) Checked HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio Compression Manager\Priority v4.00. Had Priority1-12 listed with their corresponding REG_SZ values. However, the AC-3 ACM codec was not listed and the (Default) REG_SZ data value was blank. My PC registry value had the data set at (value not set).
(9) Right-clicked and deleted the (Default) string value and it re-appeared with its data value changed to (value not set). Just had the inclination to then check Device Manager's Audio Codec list and the AC-3 ACM codec was there at priority 9.
(10) Checked HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio Compression Manager\Priority v4.00. AC-3 ACM codec still not there. Some other codec listed at Priority9.
(11) Checked Vdub and VdubMod. AC-3 ACM codec is also in their list.
Did not want to muddy the water but the Fraunhoffer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec was installed and not displayed either. After step 9 it also immediately appeared in Device Manager, Vdub and VdubMod.
Am now convinced that step 9 above was key.
Actually went ahead and uninstalled the AC-3 ACM codec using Add/Remove. Checked Device Manager, Vdub and VdubMod and AC-3 ACM Codec not there. Re-installed using the AC3ACM.inf and it appears in all three. It is still not displayed at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio Compression Manager\Priority v4.00 or after the re-install found at HKCU,Software\Freeware\ ...but it works.
Will now go for an hour's swim. I live in The Bahamas. |

Wow, thank you for your detailed post!
I'll spend some time testing and digesting this. Hopefully I can come up with a solution which I can apply to my .inf file, so this problem never occurs again.
