When I try to open an AVI (or probably any compressed) video file in Virtual Dub I have the following message:
'Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DIVX' (DivX 4+) (This line veries dependiong on the file I am trying to open)
Virtual Dub requires Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Direct Show codecs, such as those used by Windows Media PLayer are not suitable'
Trying to solve it I installed three different VFW compatible codecs, that I found on the net (for one of them I found a link here in the forum) but the message still appears and I can not open a single file.
Can someone give a hint on what do I do wrong, please!!!

You should only need to install divx from www.divx.com .It can also open divx3,and xvid files,and other generic mpeg4,if you select it,when installing. |

Hello. I'm getting the same problem that boom/tryass describes, specifically: "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable" when trying to open this 1.35GB .avi file. Having read Belial's response, I uninstalled and reinstalled Divx (whose codec version changed from 6.4 to 6.5), and I'm still getting the same error.
This error is specific to this file. Basically it's a huge full movie and I want to split out one scene and ditch the rest. Previous programs I tried for this and the results:
Easy Video Splitter was able to open and work with the file, but the split portion I chose was COMPLETELY different than what actually got split out. I'm not talking a difference of 10 seconds at the beginning and end, I'm talking about something that was a half an hour off the mark -- it completely missed the entire scene I wanted and gave me a portion of a different scene.
AVI-MPEG-ASF-WMV Splitter cannot open the file. Error: "The format of [file] can't be recognized!"
Any ideas?
Using VirtualDub 1.6.17 build 24469, running XP Pro. |

Why DIVX, when your error message is clearly asking for XVID? |

I dunno, I thought maybe they were related. You know, like Santa and Satan. 
Anyway, GowronMartok kindly directed me toward the K-Lite Codec Pack and that totally did the trick. VDub handled the file like a dream after that. Thanks! |

Why does everyone keep downloading codec packs? They cause more problems that they're worth.
There are only a small handfull of codecs that you will ever need. If VDub tells you that you need the XviD codec then download and in stall the XviD codec and set it to decode all MPEG4 files.
If you have problems decoding H264, 3IVX or other formats where a pay codec is required then use ffdshow but only set it to these formats or it will take over all your other codecs.

I use to install codec packs like there was no tomorrow. Installing more than one type of package, and at times just one if your not selective about the codecs, can really muck up things compatibility-wise with existing codecs and with the programs that use them and of the system.
When I redo my system from time to time I install only as needed and it's only a few codecs that get installed. For video I use avi, mpeg4, mpeg2 and wmv. Audio I use wav, mp3, ogg and flac depending on the material. That's just me though.
When people talk about "codec hell" their not kidding.
I do use huffy/avi and really like it for it's slight compression but keeping of quality.

This thread looks kind-of dead but I have questions on this topic.
I have been having the same issue with trying to open up an AVI file in Virual Dub and it saying...

I got the DivX stuff installed on my computer, I try to open up the AVI file in Virtual Dub and it doesn't work. I then realize that it wants DivX format (or so I think) so I try to open up the DivX converter that was included with the installation of the DivX codec and it gives me errors saying that the application I was trying to open has encountered problems and needs to close. You know, the whole "Send error report" "don't send error report" thing. I just really want Virtual Dub to open the AVI file so I can make an animated .GIF with it so I can use it as an avatar in forums and things of that sort.
I also got the Xvid codec but not knowing where it goes or how to use it, it is lying un-used in my aviproxy folder. Or it could be being used but it just doesn't fix my problem. When I got it it was not installed but instead simply saved so that might be a problem.
Now I super SuperN00bish about codecs,where they go, and all that jazz so a very descriptive description would be nice . I have read this entire thread and tried just about everything mentioned except for codec packs. It would seem that those are bad since about every thread shuns the use of them  . |

It would seem that you do not have the DivX codec installed.
You can try and install the free version (just run the exe) to decode or install the XviD (just run the exe making sure you downloaded the binary and not just the source code). |
