What audio and video codecs should I use when I want the output video to be playable on a Windows Phone device (Nokia Lumia 800)?
For PC I have been using the following settings: Audio --> Compression --> x264vfw - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec Video --> Compression --> Lame MP3 128 kbps CBR File --> Save as AVI...
PS: I am using VirtualDub 1.9.11 x86 |

From googling
Nokia Lumia 800 supported video formats: ASF, AVI, VC-1, WMV 9, MPEG-4, H.264/AVC, 3GPP formats (H.263)
Nokia Lumia 800 supported camera video format: MPEG-4
Nokia Lumia 800 supported music format: DRM Playready, MPEG-4 AAC , eAAC, eAAC+, MPEG-1 audio Layer2 (MP2), WMA Professional 9 and 10, MPEG-1 audio Layer3 (MP3), WMA 9, WMA Voice 9, WMA Lossless 9
Nokia Lumia 800 supported graphics format: BMP, PNG, WMF, EXIF, JPEG, TIFF, WBMP, GIF87a, GIF89a
So, you should be ok with what your already using, but it's screen rez is 800x480 so you might as well resize down do that or 720p

Just as a side thought
Smartphones are weird things when you come to see what formats etc you need to work on them, as the video players etc are just apps so it's possible to get a third party video player that can play back things that the stock device won't Eg my phone wouldn't play mkv's by default, but add a different player, and now it does

Please be more specific. What should I select from "Audio --> Compression" and "Video --> Compression"? |

More specific than "So, you should be ok with what your already using" ? Ok
These should work Video -> divx, xvid or x264(level 3.1) Audio -> mp3, aac

1) Are you trying to imply that I should just rename my *.avi to *.mp4?
2) I tried to copy the x264 video stream and mp3 audio stream from the avi-container to mp4-container using ffmpeg like this "ffmpeg –I inputfile.avi –vcodec copy –acodec copy output.mp4" but the resulting file is not accepted by zune.
PS: Zune is THE program Microsoft want's people to use for transfering videos from PC to phone. |

No, you say in the first message

Those (in an avi file) should be fine according to the specs on nokia's site (Without one of those devices, that's the best I can suggest)
I know nothing about the Zune software, or it's restrictions It looks like you could also use Skydrive, or according to a web search

For anything specifically Lumia, or Zune related, you'd probably be better off on a site dedicated to that device as you're the first person to ever mention it on here, so there's a lack of practical knowledge

The problem is not with Zune. I am able to move and play proper mp4 files with it. Zune somehow detects if the file is OK or not. Zune does not simply rely on the file extension.
Let me repeat my question: What codecs I need to use in Virtualdub and whether there is need for changing the container? Or if I truly can use x264 then maybe there are some settings I am not aware of as I am using the defaults. |
