I ran across your version of VirtualDub for Mpeg2 awhile back and liked it. Recently though I decided it was time to clear my HD and do some general cleaning - and I had not kept a copy of your version. So I downloaded version 1.6.10 and a few things had changed concerning editing - but nothing major.

Just went to the Capture side - and whoa! Under Vdub I was always limited to capturing using the WDM driver - which meant I could not capture larger than 352x240. I could of course put the VFW driver on and capture 640x480 - but was not able to capture at 352x288, 480x480 - etc. just 320x240 - 176x144 - and 640x480.

Now with the Direct Show capture I can capture any size I wish up to 640x480. Before I was stuck with Intervideo WinDVR in order to handle my TV-card and it handled my Sony HandyCam poorly I always thought. Just been playing with the capture you now have available in your version of VDub today - and WOW!

Can capture on the fly in uncompressed AVI or Intel IYUV - do a deinterlace while capturing vastly superior to Intervideo - and produce a stunning - and I mean stunning AVI on run through after capture using Xvid.

My TV-card has a built-in MPEG2 chip - but AVI is just a smaller file for archival than MPEG2. I have been capturing using MPEG2 then using your version of VDUB to convert to Xvid - but now I will use your for my HandyCam.

Using DirectShow - I do not see a preview - but the HandyCam has a monitor - so I know when to stop it. Very glad you worked on this.

Thanks and thanks again...

Not that fcchandler doesn't deserve credit for his mod, but all the DirectShow capturing stuff was done by the original developer, Avery Lee. smile.gif

Yep. The new capturing abilities came from the VirtualDub 1.6.10 code branch, and I had nothing to do with it. Thank Avery Lee for that. wub.gif

Thanks for letting me know. But it is really just wild. I have a cheap card - a Kworld TV-Card with a Conexant MPEG2 Chip and a Phillips Tuner. The software bundled was Intervideo WinDVR and their own software providing a VFW driver at 640x480 for AVI.

Their software did not offer the ability to deinterlace on the fly - so I used it rarely. I have had the card for a while - since my Pentium 2 days. Then I only could capture at 320x240 due to limitation of computer. When I carried the card over to the P3 - could capture at SVCD. Now I have a Celeron with a P4 core at 2400mHz and can capture full-screen with the card. I just use the onboard Intel Graphic Chip.

Recently my Sony HandyCam died of circa 1995 and I bought a new one that is Hi8 instead of Video8. Svideo has caused Intervideo WinDVR fits. Having composite out on the HandyCam as well as Svideo - I just went back to using Video8 and sending the video to the card via Composite.

But I took a Hi8 tape and ran it through Svideo into the card using VDub and the Direct Show Driver and as I stated first time - Stunning! Usinf Xvid at a rate of 1500 for a 640x480 convert - the resulting file is vastly superior over MPEG2 at same size - and equals easily the DVD settings of Intervideo.

I'll still be using your program version as WinDVR does allow me to schedule recordings, etc and MPEG2 is generally good enough for watching a show that you are going to erase once watched. But for my HandyCam - AVI only from now on - now at last my Computer shows my HandyCam equal to the TV!!!

cya..
