For creating SVCD's, I use VirtualDub to extract the audio as a .wav file.
I have to convert the audio to 44100 Hz, 8bit, stereo. Most of the videos already have those settings, so I can just leave the 'No Change' radio buttons checked.
For a +/- 42 minute video, these settings generate a 442 MB file. However, when I choose ''44100 Hz, 8bit, stereo'' directly (instead of the 'No change'), the generated file is only 221 MB!
What's the difference between these files? |

I suspect that "no change" is actually producing a 16-bit PCM file. If you click the button to convert it to 8-bit you cut the file size in half, but you also lower the quality.

In that case, there's a small bug in VD; the dialog does say the file is 8-bit, while it really is 16-bit.
Either that, or "no change" converts 8-bit to 16-bit, which shouldn't make a difference in quality.
(I don't hear the difference, but the speakers on my system are crap anyway) |
