Virtualdub 1.5.1 "freezes" While Compressing, Can't get through a compression process

I cannot get through a compression process in Virtualdub 1.5.1 (NTSC avi to DivX 5.0.2) since the system always freezes at some point during the process (source file : NTSC avi, 12GB). The system must be rebooted every time it happens.

The time elapsed before the system hangs is not repetitive : it can vary from a few minutes to near the end of the process. I've tried the 1-pass based quality and also the 2-pass encoding process but the system reacts the same way as described above. I've applied everything I've found in this forum that could be in some way related to my problem (using a different DV Codec, upgrading VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers to version 4.38, etc) but nothing resolved it. I've also tried to compress using VirtualdubMod 1.4.13 and DivX 5.0.3, still the problem remains. I really need help.

System Description : Win XP Home Edition, ECS K7S5A Socket A Motherboard, AMD Athlon 1800+ CPU, 512MB of PC133 SDRAM Memory, 50GB of unfragmented hard disk free space (NTFS format).

What codec are you using as source?

The DV Video Encoder - Type 1 codec was used as the capturing DV codec (in Ulead Videostudio 5.0) and also in VirtualDub at first. I am now using the Main Concept DV codec ver. 2.1.0 in VirtualDub but it didn't resolve the problem. Would it be a good idea to capture all over again from the DV Camcorder using the Main Concept DV codec ver. 2.1.0 ?

Is there a possible issue with using such a large (12GB) source file? Or, is that only for output that you would have problems?

Please take anything I say with many many grains of salt. I can't tell the difference between my AVI and a hole in the ground.

Sorry for the late feedback but I've been working on the case. This time, I did some more tests with the DivX 5.0.4 Codec using Vdub 1.5.1 but the system still freezes at some point during the 1st Pass of a 2-Pass encoding process. Here's the information I get :

"Access Violation. The instruction at 0x01722D51 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be written."

I hope this information will be helpful.

My configuration : ECS K7S5A Socket A Motherboard, Athlon 1800+ CPU, 2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM, Creative Audigy MP3+ Sound Card, Diamond Monster Fusion 16MB Graphic Card (3Dfx Voodoo Banshee).
