Hello,
I am using an avi file created with pinnacle studio 15, containing divx and mp3 flow. My problem with virtual dub is that I can't play this file on my computer: virtual dub show a message saying it can't start the codec. So my question: what are using virtual dub to decode MP3 flow: internal virtual dub codec or an ACM codec or the directshow filter given by windows?
thank you Rmanal |

VirtualDub > Audio > Compression contains by default the "MPEG Layer-3" codec which corresponds to the "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec".
This codec is a standard part of the Windows Operating System and is also used by the Windows Media Player.
From within Windows Media Player you can check which audio-codecs are installed on your computer, via Help > About Windows Media Player > Technical Support Information > Audio Codecs.
Here you should see some information like this: ACM - Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (professional) - 0055 - l3codecp.acm 3.4.0.0.
In Pinnacle Studio you may verify if you can choose this codec when encoding to MP3 (instead of the one that you probably used by now). |

Try enabling in VirtualDub the "Prefer internal audio decoders" option under Options menu => Preferences => AVI

Yes it works: thank you But now I can play when I press the I play button, but not the O? In this case VB is blocked on "VB in progress". Could someone tell me what is wrong with my file: http://9giga.sfr.fr/n/50-17/share/LNK30274...74f106ad7912ec/
Thank you in advance |

At first view there is not immediatly something wrong in your file. There is only an error on the audio part of it, put this seems to be autocorrected by VirtualDub.
The difference is that: - the I-play button only plays a preview of the "Input" file and - the O-play button plays a preview of the "Input" AND the "Output" file.
Normally you will see the input-file in the left window and the output-file in the right window (after filters have been applied, but before it is being compressed). Meanwhile the message "dub in progress" is being shown in the title-field of the VirtualDub window.
If you want the Output-preview to work, you should verify that you have indicated a codec for Video > Compression and also one for the Audio > Compression. Also verify that for both codecs your desired settings are applied. (An alternative for a working preview can be to choose Video > Compression > Uncompressed AND Audio > Compression > No compression, but I would not use this for creating a new file, it risks to be a very large file of a great number of MegaBytes).
If you want to create and record a new file (by using your original video-file as the input), you have to click on File > Save as AVI... |

Of course there is probably: have you successfully play it in output? Compression does not take place for the output view. |

(Some people dancing on 'la camisa negra'.)
I have no problem to play it in Output. I have no filters applied, nor in Video (Video > Filters), nor in Audio (Audio > Filters).
I tried it as well with video and audio as uncompressed, as respectively with Divx 6.8.3 and MPEG Layer-3.
Maybe someone else has got an idea ? |

Yes for me when I play the output it goes directly from the start to the end. |

Probably it directly goes to the end when you select Direct Stream Copy for both Video and Audio.
This takes almost no time at all (to generate a file) because there is no compression to be done. The original Video and Audio are simply copied to a new file.
You must not see VirtualDub as a player but as program to edit video files: apply filters, change of codec, cut out pieces, append pieces, etc... To get a preview within VirtualDub, you've got the Output play button.
Once you have created the resulting AVI-file, you better use Windows Media Player (or other) to play it on your computer. |

I don't follow you: what is the link you made between the playing of the video with the ouput play button and the encodage at exportation level? |

Maybe I am trying to explain something that is totally out of your question...
On "Jan 13 2012, 05:34 PM" you said that VB was blocked on "VB in progress". Did you really mean by that, that it "hangs" and that it does nothing at all, and that you have to stop and restart VirtualDub ?
If not, than I can only repeat that the Output play button shows you the result after filters have been applied and before encoding is taking place. (it shows this result in the right one of the two windows).
Maybe it becomes more clear if you once apply a filter: - via Video > Filters > Add - choose for example the "Resize" filter and click "OK" - in the filter: resize window: new size = "Absolute" / set it for example on 640 x 480 aspect ratio = Disabled filter mode = Lanczos3 / Interlace = unchecked framing options = Do not letterbox or crop codec-friendly sizing = Do not adjust - click "OK" - click now on the "Cropping" button and change the "0" values to some higher values (or put the arrow of the mouse pointer at the top/left/right/bottom edge and drag), so that some parts of the original image are cut off (Do this to only have an idea of the process that will happen afterwards) - click "OK" to confirm - click "OK" to Close the Filter-window
When you click now on the Output play button you will see the result of the resize-filter. It is this result that will be used when you effectively execute the compression and create a new file via File > Save as AVI...
I hope it is more clear to you now to "What is the use of the Output play button ?". |

Effectively a misunderstanding. I know how to use VD: my purpose is that with that file: http://9giga.sfr.fr/n/50-17/share/LNK30274...74f106ad7912ec/ VD hangs when I try to use the output play button, instead with the input play button it works. So my request for help: 1/ Do you have the same behavior with my file? 2/ Can someone explain what is wrong with my file?
Thank you |

I'm using VirtualDub 1.10.2 test 2 on Windows XP.
if you use Audio => Direct stream copy the output play stuck but with Audio => Full processing mode it works fine.

rmanal, I am a little bit ashamed to never have asked you which version of VirtualDub you are using and under which Windows Operating System.
I still do use the actually "stable" version 1.9.11 (build 32842) under Windows 7.
I tried several scenarios to try to make your videofile hang, but untill now with no succes. In all the cases where it does not work, I get error messages, and so no way to block it.
Today, I also tried the latest "test" version 1.10.2 (build 34717). With Video > Full processing (compression to DivX) and Audio > Direct Stream Copy, there is no sound but it still plays from the begin untill the end, without any problem. At my opinion the "no sound", in this test, is a normal result of the Direct Stream Copy (just the same as with version 1.9.11).
What does ale5000 mean exactly with "the output play stuck" ? Does it make "hang" VirtualDub or is there "no sound" ? |

Does it make "hang" VirtualDub or is there "no sound" ? | It show "(dub in progress)" in the title bar but it doesn't go forward. You can stop it so it doesn't hang, it is more like a localized freeze.
