First I have two systems one running XP the other running 98SE. The XP seems fine running the most current stable version.

On the 98SE I have encountered a problem with every version above 1.6x. When previewing the video in the input screen and clicking the stop button the video takes several seconds to stop.

Is there some configuration setting in VDub that might correct this problem?

I know I could use the XP for everything, but sometimes I am doing other things on the XP and just want to use the 98SE for basic conversion.

I need to be able to run at least vers. 1.8.1 to take advantage of some of the plugins (WMV for example) that have been made available by FccHandler.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Win98SE is sooooo old that even if some way was found to get round that problem it's not likely to work. W98 hasn't been supported by Ms for over 5 years now and a lot of software is no longer supporting W98. It's a case of if it works, fine; if not, tough luck.

I am frequently told to update my PC on other forums and I'm running XPsp3. My philosophy is that not everything newer is always better. I can't stand Vista (when it works) and W7 is awful - I hate it. So until they come out with something better I'll stick with it until it's unusable.

This is the position you've reached with W98. Because of the major differences between W98 and XP and later OS's it's getting to the point where W98 is almost unusable unless you are running very old stuff.
I remember Avery mentioning in a thread a long while back that maintaining compatibility with W98 was getting impossible so I guess you'll have to decide what to do with your W98 machine.

So you don't know of any possible configuration settings that may solve the problem. The 98SE meets the system requirements to run the latest version of VDub, and it does run except for the issue stated above.

Does this happen if you hide the output pane (View > Input Pane Only)?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try and see what happens.
