W2K, fast processor, plenty of memory and disk, VirtualDub 1.4.13, DivX 5.0.2
While compressing a number of fifteen and thirty second video clips today, I noticed that about one-third of them had a size about 400K bigger than I expected (with the settings I use, I get a file very close to 1,400,000 bytes for a fifteen second .avi with audio).
At first, I thought I had some setting wrong (although I never change any of the compression parameters), so I simply redid the ones that came out "too big." One still came out too big (about 1,800,000 - the exact same size as before). I compared the two files (not the same, even though I used the same settings). I loaded up the raw YUY2 file, and promptly saved it (with the DivX codec) three times in succession without changing any settings or even reloading the file. As I watched the processing, the progress projected a file size of about 1,400,000 bytes the entire time, but at the last instant, the file again jumped to 1,800,000 bytes the first two times (one of those files matched one of the first two, the other did not match any of the prior files). The third time in quick succession (and the fifth time overall), VirtualDub finally spit out a file the size I expected in the first place. All of the files looked normal when played.
It surprised me a little that I did not get identical files when rerunning the program with the same parameters, but the extra filesize seemed even more confusing (for some of the thirty second clips, I got a filesize of about 3,200,000 bytes when I expected, and usually get, a file about 2,800,000 bytes). I will watch this more closely in the future if you want additional information. |

You must be one of those people who actually sits and watches the status window while it's encoding (yes, I do too until I fall asleep).
Clearly what you're describing is (or should be) impossible. Is there any way that you could post links to the file(s) you are compressing and exactly what settings you are using?
