Hi, This is probably due to my ineptitude however I cannot seem to extract audio from an mkv file I know contains audio. I beleive I am simply not familiar with the process. I have opened an mkv file and viewed hte available streams. Audo (MPEG4) is there. I have a tool I have used to confirm I have supported (compatible) codecs installed and I can preview the output to avi and see video and hear audio. The avi file produced however, does not have any audio and as it processes it I observe the audio stream is not being extracted. After looking at the menus and trying everything I could think of I am guessing I have to extract them seperately. ?? Anyway, if someone can clue me in to the process and basic setup selections that would be greatly appreciated! The documentation is quite good in stating what the various options do but very light on how to perform basic operation. |

VirtualDubMod does not support muxing AAC audio in AVI. You'd have to use other tools... AVIMux GUI would perhaps work.

Thanks for your reply Stephan. Sadly the AVIMux link is dead but it prompted me to do more reading and research. There are many other forums with people reporting similar difficulties. It does seem strange that one can preview an mkv file within VirtualDubMod and hear the audio just fine but when it is processed, the audio disappears. Anyway, I will try an easier path for now and simply download codecs that should allow me to veiw mkv files using hte DiVx player directly and forget about converting them to AVI. It's all a bit too problematic and too much work I think at this point. The number of formats is becoming a bit silly I think. |

in my sig the link is working... and its not smart to convert a file to just being able to watch it on your soft DivX player (do you really use that????)
download the ]matroska packs and/or use a good player like Media Player Classic.
the amount of formats is not getting rediculous, theres just somethings Matroska can do no other format can do right now.

You need to go to streams in virtualdub mod and click on save as wav. The program will tell you if this isn't possible and you'll have to demux the audio instead. Use Besweet (the best audio conversion program I know) to convert your audio to a more manageable form and mux it to your AVI. |
