Crashes When Decoding Vbr Mp3 In Avi

I'm trying to convert some videos from avi to ogm or matroska to add subtitle tracks. I've got a lot of trouble with all of those which have a VBR MP3 audio track. I know it's bad to use VBR MP3 with avi, so that's also why I want to convert it to mkv.
when doing a direct conversion (with everything in direct stream copy) with virtualdubmod, processing stops and log says "possible livelock". So, I've checked to see if can I read it OK, but when I use the seek bar to jump in the file, then the video becomes slow and buggy and the audio goes in loops.
When played in another player, the movie is fine, evening with seeking. I suppose virtualdub doesn't use the directshow codec, but then how can I find which one does it uses? How to change it?

I've solved the seeking problem by enabling the "priss rocks!" audio option. I can now convert an AVI with MP3 VBR to ogm and mkv by recompressing to audio stream (I can even compress it to Vorbis which is VBR!). It works fine, but I think it should also work with a direct stream copy, because ogm and mkv can handle VBR audio tracks. But I still got the hanging and "Processing thread has not cycled for ten seconds -- possible livelock" error in the log when I try a "direct stream conversion" to mkv or ogm.
I think it is a bug, isn't it?
