You are correct, however provided Avery follows the Microsoft SDK there shouldn't be a problem. I think the fact that previous versions were "reverse enginered" to suppport asf was the reason Microsoft took offence. I don't see why they would prevent Avery from following their own SDK.

The Windows Media SDKs are not usable for two reasons. One is that you must obtain a unique, revocable license key for each product -- that is not compatible with the GPL. The second problem is that as part of the license agreement you have to prohibit transcoding compressed ASF files to other formats. That is not compatible with my sense of fairness to the user.

Thanks for clearing that up. Concerning the second problem though "you have to prohibit transcoding compressed ASF files to other formats". I assume this to mean that you can't convert an ASF/WMV file to an AVI file.
Would this restriction apply only to a non commercial application because Ulead's Mediastudio Pro 6.5 and Eo Video both allow this.

Do they simply repackage the audio and video from the ASF unchanged in the AVI or do they completely decompress the audio and video then recompress and mux in AVI. A good way to tell is if the process takes only a few seconda or many minutes up to hours. If it is much more than a few seconds to a minute or two then it is decompressing and recomnpressing. Anyone can do that but you loose quality. Besides being reverse engineered Avery's code was able to just swap the package quick and easy. Making it a simple matter to escape Microsoft's crappy ASF/WMV scheme. Microsoft has a strong sense of unfair play and a need for an uneven playing field. And they used their control over their IP to enforce it. With Avery's code it is easy for people to go willy-nilly leaving the ASF format behind! That is dangerous. Well for Microsoft it is at least. tongue.gif Most people could not be bothered to sit through many hours just to convert a clip from an ASF file to a lower quality something else file. dry.gif

Not to nit pick, but TMPEG does go through the decompress/recompress process, if they used the SDK or not I have no idea.

also, adding to the feature request, I'd like to have everything on the options menu savable, not just the preferences box, half of the settings I use constantly aren't in the preferences, and because of it, I have to hand set them each time I load VD
