QUOTE
Error 418: No capture device installed

Can this be possible? I have the card installed, as well as the drivers.

I have an I/O Magic PC PVR card, and it seems that the only capture app that works with it are either PowerVCR II (the horrid program that came with the card) and WinDVR. I've browsed the I/O Magic forums and have seen various topics reagarding this matter. It seems that others also cannot get this card to work with Vdub. Is there some DirectShow filter that can solve this?

can't it be solved by the vfw-wdm wrapper?? if not it would be strange!!

did you try dx 8.0-bda or vfw update? ... 2 tiny apps, that helped me very well. Send me PM, so I can mail you these apps.

cheers Sill

Thanks, man! biggrin.gif Now I can record directly to DivX, XviD, or Huffyuv, without having to go through the aweful "Power VCR II" anymore. cool.gif

hi grif_mcrenolds,

thank you for your feedback - appreciated. Hey grif, as I can see U're one of the divx.com mods... so I think you're proud of "your" product - at last I would biggrin.gif BUT please be aware of recording direct to divx/xvid!!

Never ever think about it!! I know the codec is capable of doing it but: during recording your input is being encoded... so, you loose information!! Especially analog material needs the full input information. What you do afterwards is your choice (divx/xvid) but remember that your recorded input will only look good when it is encoded from a clean source, I mean an input with its full information of a picture.

that's why it is highly recommended to capture in Huffyuv for a lossless input (or picvideo - quality set to 19/20).

I know that some results (recorded straight to divx) look good, they look better when GMC and B-frames are turned of... they look best recorded with huffyuv!! cool.gif

so far, so good

cheers Sill

Yes, huffyuv is very good. biggrin.gif I use it when I convert my RM files to AVI, later compressing them to MPEG-4 (DivX/XviD). The only problem is that fr some reason huffyuv doesn't show up in my codec list when I try capturing. 1-pass quality mode at a low quant like 2 or 4 still look pretty good, but then again, encoding in DivX may sometimes be a bit to slow for live capture.

hi grif,

let's try to face it... but first you know what we need cool.gif

tell us everything about your settings, e.g.:

- your system in general
- your chip (BT-8x8 or philips)
- your audio compression, don't think about mp3 on the fly compression!!
- source (video tuner, video composite or s-video)
- your video/data format
- capture settings (video buffer limit, audio buffer limit and audio buffer size)
- your disk I/O
- did you activate a spill system setup (multisegment capture)?
- make sure that DMA is enabled on your hard drive(s).
- and so on...

cheers Sill

CPU: AMD Athlon 1Ghz
Chipset: VIA
Capture Device: I/O Magic PC PVR
Audio codec: PCM 44.1 khz 16 bit
Video codec: XviD MPEG-4

The rest I'm not sure. It freezes up just when going into the capture interface, and not the actual capture. I tried reinstalling VirtualDub, but it still won't work. I'll try and see if DMA is working properly.

The only problem is that fr some reason huffyuv doesn't show up in my codec list when I try capturing.

tell your video capture program to use Huffyuv will depend on your choosen video format. You should set the format to YUY2 or UYVY. Then you choose Huffyuv from the "Compression" dialog list. (Do it in this order, because Huffyuv might not show up in the latter dialog unless you've already set the format in the former.) ...
- e.g.: Data Format YUY2 YUV4.2.2 interleaved?? if not, huffyuv won't show up!!

- next: what did I told you cool.gif , and what did I see ohmy.gif
QUOTE
Video codec: XviD MPEG-4
you really should stick to huffyuv!! or a MJPEG Codec like PicVideo (Quality set to 19 or 20) - but apart from that, this shouldn't be the reason for this strange behaviour...

- did you check if DMA was/ is enabled?, 'cause I can't imagine any software problems...

Works great now! I uninstalled all the drivers, and reinstalled them. Then I disabled the DMA on my DVD-ROM, and now it works great. Huffyuv also showed up in my codec list when I set the color depth to yuy2. Everything is good! cool.gif

Thanks for the advice! biggrin.gif
