O nikehair,
if you want to reach the filesize of 700 MB you have to use the 2pass solution (firstpass and after that second pass) Otherwise you cannot play the movie ! You can change the codec to one pass quality based for example, then you can play your file, but you wont reach exactly 700MB. If you only use the first of the two passes, you will get the probs that you had !
If you want a better audio quality, just lower the Bitrate of your video (for mp3@192 try video bitrate of 930 for mp3@256 try 868 and for the best audio @320 try 804...

Just be sure to do BOTH passes !
And load the file from the second pass to compress the audio !

"2. Set Audio Direct StreamCopy
3. Set Audio Full Processing Mode"

hmm... does that i mean i dun set any compression for the audio during the first pass?

Yes exactly,

first you compress the video, and after that (complete 2pass encoding) the audio. If you do both in the same run, you had to compress the audio twice (during first and second pass) and beside this it should be noticed that VDub will normally crashes when doing so wink.gif

and how does video bitrate affect the quality? tongue.gif

I use my crappy excel-sheet for calculating the video bitrate, you can get it here:
Bitrate Calculator
It aims the desired file size rather ok.

If you want best quality, try a high bitrate (in the sheet set up a larger final avi size) and higher mp3 bitrate for the movie, in VDub try different filters (i.e. temporal smoother) and crop the black boxes above the movie in your mpeg stream by using the nulltransform filter - cropping in vdub

BTW:
1. Dont be surprised when you dont get the desired filesize of i.e. 1400 MB in the end, VCD are often very compressed, so that the file can get this large
2. if you try to convert VCD you have a MPEG1 Stream, after extracting with vcdgear you can load this directly into VDub, no need for avs or GKnot here (I told it in the text above, but just wanted to be sure you got the difference between MPEG1 and MPEG2 wacko.gif )

uuaaahhhhhhh ph34r.gif shame on me ph34r.gif and sorry @all !

In my "guide" I wrote something completely wrong:

2. Audio Direct Stream copy
is ok but
3. should be Video Full Processing Mode !!!!!

I will edit it now, hope you wont kill me !

Now this should work, sorry but this is the problem when using copy and paste from one sentence to another that late

743mb .dat file. 1hr 11min 48s.. hmm.. i wanna shrink it to approx 300mb divx avi file..

according to it... i have to use 442 bitrate which seems very low...
hmm.. is the calculator for first pass only?

No, the calculator is ok, but your final avi size is very low, dont think that you will get good quality, but you can try, for a movie length of 1 hour 11 minutes try at least 500 MB, but why not 700 ? Will easily fit on exactly on cd ! And normally gets smaller, cause you have a one disk VCD already

hmm.. icic...

cos i was trying to match my friend's one vcd (2 episode on disc) into 2 170+mb files... lost contact with him though..

*shrugs* tongue.gif

think i'll go for 600mb to be on the safe side... my grandfather cd-writer can only go at 650mb.. not more...

Just give it a try, load your MPEG File into VDub and cut out a 2 minute scence with much movements in it. then try different bitrates, normally you can say that a movie gets better if the bitrate is higher, but vcd normally hasnt such a good quality anyway. i had movies with good quality @ a bitrate auf 550, but normally you should try to have 700 - 1200 or so. It depends on what you want. Watching on TV ? Then you could take a lower bitrate.

And dont be ashamed to ask these questions, I was not born knowing all these things wink.gif and always remember:
This is the Newbie section of the (unofficial) VirtualDub support board. We had no job without these questions smile.gif

could be, now the "guide" is correct and it should work !
And be sure to watch the file created during the second pass (name2.avi) the file created in the first pass (name1.avi) contains no visible video data, so you only see a boring black screen, when opening it in your player.

And please follow exactly the "guide" (open and save the right files !!!) I checked it and it is ok now.

Good night, if you go to bed now cool.gif
