In VirtualDub by selecting 'ffdshow video codec' I usually choose MPEG-4 with FOURCC XviD in the encoder option, but now is gone.
There was only MJPEG, HuffYUV (FFmpeg variant), FFV1, DV, and Uncompressed.
I don't know why is missing?.. Formerly one of them has an option of MPEG-4.
Did anyone know what the cause is..? Thanks in advance.

PS: It was a long time I didn't use this VD, I don't know exactly what applications I installed the cause is lost.
The same thing has even uninstalled and reinstalled, but in vain.. still missing!

They were removed from ffdshow itself (nothing to do with virtualdub), mainly because they were rubbish/broken/unmaintained and nobody wanted to fix them when there are already perfectly good codecs that do the same already

For mpeg4 just use the xvid codec instead

Hmm.. I see, whereas inwardly I like this application so simple to use than XviD.
Unfortunately that Avery Lee doesn't want to develop anymore.. sad.gif
Anyway, thanks for the info, dloneranger.

It's nothing to do with avery or virtualdub?
FFDshow's done by totally different people and they decided to remove it from ffdshow itself
Virtualdub's still being developed, the latest test update was : Jul 21 2014

Like dloneranger said: the possibility for Xvid encoding is no longer part of ffdshow tryouts,
and once again this has nothing to do with VirtualDub itself. This last one is just making use of installed (video for windows-)encoders on your computer.

So, it is still very easy to encode to Xvid via VirtualDub.

You have just to download and install the native Xvid-encoder from www.xvid.com :

Actually they are at version 1.3.3.

After the installation, the Xvid encoder will be available in your VirtualDub via the Video-menu > Compression... entry.
If you have multiple encoders installed, you will maybe have to scroll down the list to see the "Xvid MPEG-4 Codec", because alphabetically it is located at the end !

Tell us if this works.

Good luck.

Do you need xvid to see video or to encode a video if to encode we are all using x264

Video - X264vfw https://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/
Audio - aac-acm https://sourceforge.net/projects/fcchandler/files/
Splitters - LavFilters https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases

There is a post or two around somewhere showing some suggested start settings for x264 use. I did look but this forum isn't the best place to find anything. I did search for x264 and dloneranger (who posted the guide) you do the same as see if can find the post. Posts such s those should have there own forum or placed where are always available

[mod edit] Image of x264 basic settings
http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...1157&hl=x264vfw

Xvid if you still really need it is where it has always been https://www.xvid.org/download/

Abrazo, you are right. I just found out now. I agree with dloneranger said that nothing to do with VirtualDub. Sadly that XviD is no longer part of ffdshow.

For me, to adjust average bitrate in XviD is not easy like ffdshow. It's rather difficult, a lot must be set.. where I have to adjust the target quantizer to be matched includes calculator, also target size(kbytes), should fill H:M:S + fps, B-VOP, quant ratio, quant offset, etc... Uhhh very complex, it's not easy like setting bitrate in ffdshow which is so simple & fast..!!

To just set a bitrate in XVid?
In the config screen, click the button 'target quantizer' and it'll change to 'Target bitrate', then just move the slider or type in a number
That said, unless you're trying to hit a specific file size using a fixed bitrate will usually either make a file too big or quality too low
If you don't need to do that you can just set 'target quantizer' to a quality you find acceptable and off you go

Just because you couldn't set all the other options in FFDShow doesn't mean you have to change them in XVid unless you have a good reason to
They're generally fine as they are, apart from 'motion search precision' where you'd want that to be 5 or 6

Once you've set it though, you shouldn't have to mess about every time
If you do need to keep setting it again and again, set it and the 'save processing settings' in virtualdub, then you can just 'load processing settings' to reload the xvid configuration

Great thanks, dloneranger. It's so easy heh.. How silly me, I did a wrong way by direct adjusting the slider without pressing 'target quantizer', then simultaneously typing numbers in calc\target size... complicated adjustment!

But one more, I cannot change the Audio bitrate, it doesn't want to change if I edited in calc button.. how to..?
Could you tell me more details of what you wrote: "They're generally fine as they are, apart from 'motion search precision' where you'd want that to be 5 or 6" ??

I'm sorry for many questions, because I am a layman about this. Thanks before.

Xvid is a video encoder/decoder for audio encoding. Virtualdub menu for Audio > Compression then select AC3 or other audio encoder you need

6 - Ultra High

Why do you need xvid when there are better video encoders !

Down at the bottom there's a 'more' button to the right of 'quality preset'
Clicking that will show you some extra settings
There are two on there that you can adjust to trade speed of encoding over quality of encoding
'Motion search precision' and 'vhq mode' (also 'use vhq for bframes too')

Basically if you set them to a higher number the pc will spend longer looking to match up moving parts of the video

(in bitrate mode)
This makes it slower to encode but gives a better quality video
Or you can lower them to give a faster encoding time but worse quality video

(In quantizer mode)
This makes it slower to encode but gives a smaller file for the same quality
Or you can lower them to give a faster encoding time but a larger file for the same quality

These kind of settings are usually set at max or 1 before max
(typically the max setting is not a lot different to the one before but noticeably slower)

---------
Talking of the 'preset' button, you could also use that to save your favourite settings

-vdub-, Yes, I know there are many of the best encoders, but I'm curious to know precisely, also don't know how to properly configs this XviD.
Also, I can combine it with TVMW5 containing ffdshow (for standard chosen without x264 or MKV).
This is either because I could carry anywhere this VD due to practical/portable.. sometimes useful for me.

About audio compression, at first I think there have menus in XviD to change the bitrate directly, apparently separated by click the Audio tab exactly like AVI audio converting.
Soo..many thanks for your advice. smile.gif

That's ok, you might need to change the profile/level to unrestricted if you want to encode higher spec video (hd)
Otherwise it'll give an error message
