I am totally new to video editing so a little patients please.
was just wondering how to convert a file of my digi camcorder to a smaller size???
Not to bothered about loosing quality as i just want to reduce thing so i cn send them or post them on the internet.
For instance if i download a film it might be 800mb for 1 and a half hours but with my camcorder i only get about 15 mins if i am lucky

Thankx in advance
jason

No need to post in Off-Topic ;-)

Your digicam probably uses Mpeg1. Iīd use DivX for encoding the files, itīs a good compression, and widely used. Downloading and installing it isnīt really a problem either, so it wonīt be a problem for others.

The image dimensions have to be divideable by 16, ideally. Use Multipass, thatīll give better results than 1Pass.

Donīt forget Audio compression.

Also, you might think about doing some filtering before encoding. The cleaner the image, the better the compression - thus the better the quality.

if you're using dv camcorder, you'll need dv codec for it to open in vdub

That link should be a ZIP file, probably containing a codec.

A codec is a program(plug-in rather) to COmpress and DECompress data. Uncompressed Video(or audio) is huge. Thus codecs exist.
Not all are equal, though. Some are better, some are worse. Most are lossy, meaning that theyīll discard some information every time you encode the video.

Usually a codec comes with an installer. So just run it.

If not, it should at least have an INF file with it - right-click and select INSTALL, that should install it.

I just downloaded the file. It contains a REG file. I guess itīs essentially the same as an INF file, so right-click and select whatever says "install" or "run".

(On my computer, Win2K, German, it says "zusammenfuehren" - must be one of the brilliant translations we often see. Should be something like "merge" I think.)

i am learning though,
Just realised if i go up to video and compression you can select programmes to change things
Just converted one to black and white, lol
Did try to run one in divx but it says there was something missing to play it.

drop that; vdub 160 should open DV files directly.
so if 160 doesn't open it, it's not DV.

also you didn't said what the error was (on opening attempt)
