I've always avoided qt when possible, but at least the newer versions don't do the take over your system thing
It's possible it's one of the other directshow filters ;-)
As I'm using win7, I can see in the win7filtertweaker that h264 can be decoded with any of these filters
microsoft, coreavc, divx8, ffdshow
It doesn't show which splitter is used though
