For anyone interested I uploaded a clip that is about 5 minutes. It is a little over 160 megs. It was encoded with 3000kbps for bitrate.
If anyone is curious about or had ever thought of getting a Flip Ultra HD cam then this upload may help out.

I wanted to encode with a lower bitrate, 160meg seems kind of high for a 5 minute vvid file, or is it? i still am confused because I hear people saying that you should go for 2500, 3000, 4500, etc but is this right?
I have been doing video a good deal bet yet I'm unsure still about a couple of things. |

Theres something very odd about that video Is there any reason why there are so many duplicate frames ? Eg from frame 982 onwards
About bitrates, have you tried the quality based modes instead? I can't remember the last time I used a bitrate for encoding - ooohh must have been the last time I wanted a video to be exactly dvd sized

Duplicates?
The video is 30 fps. Do you mean there are frames that are copies or something?
In Xvid that would be quantizer right? in x264 I use crf mode. |

Yeah - I usually use single pass mode as I'm never trying to hit a specific file size
Duplicates - yup, there's lots of them In panning scenes theres motion, motion, motion, duplicate, motion, motion, duplicate etc
From frame 900 it's every 3rd frame for quite a way

I used one pass xvid for that but used the bitrate and not the quantizer.
hmmmm. I don't know why there are dupes. How are you analyzing the file? i would like to know more about this one. |

Hmmm, if it's not in the origional, check the xvid settings At the bottom right there's a 'more' button One of the options in there is frame drop ratio - if that's not 0 it can make duplicate frames

I think I'm seeing what your saying. It like stops after a few frames then continues for a few more as I advance through the frames. Now I'm wondering if this is a camera or a codec issue? |

frame drop ratio checks out at 0.. I wish I could open the original mp4 but I can't through vdub, not even through the DS plugin, nor avisynth and it's not a quicktime version neither. |

That's be interesting to check - I'm sure I've opened one off a flip before now
I must have, a friend's got one and needed it converted to 25 fps as we're in the uk

Another 5 minutes or so.
I don't know. Since I've gotten this camera certain things have been strange. I have even had my player just close out on me if I went to seek through a video. Tearing and now this thing with duplicate frames. |

Ok, I can open that fine in virtualdub with the directshow plugin
So, you're missing some directshow filters...... Quicktime should give you the right splitter to decode it
The origional doesn't have the duplicate frames in it

I have QT alternative but it looks like alternative isn't enough. I would prefer not to have to install the real quicktime, I kind of loathe it, lol.
That's good to hear that the mp4 is in good shape.
On an off-note, I went from 29.97 for encoding the frame rate and used x264 and I haven't seen a tear line yet! |
