Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Newbie Questions > Recorded Files Cannot Be Played

Two days ago I tried a screen capture from my computer using Virtual Dub. It was a different resolution than standard so I tried various codecs. I've tried googling the problem and searching the message board but I haven't found a solution. The first video codec is 32 bits RGB (RV32) and has a resolution of 1600x4294966096, which makes no sense. The second and third video codec are Packed YUV 4:2:2, Y:U:Y:V (YUY2), and have a resolution of 1600x1200. All of the files were saved as .avi files. None of them play in VirtualDub or VLC. What did I do wrong and can I rescue the video somehow?

1. Does it happen with all video files?

So far yes.

2. What version of VirtualDub and/or VirtualDubMod are you using? (The version number is in the top bar)

VirtualDub 1.10.4 (build 35491/release) by Avery Lee

3. If you are using VirtualDub, does it also happen if you are using VirtualDubMod? If you are using VirtualDubMod, does it also happen if you are using VirtualDub?

Haven't tried it.

4. If saving a file in VirtualDubMod, does it have the same problem if you save to AVI, OGM, or MKV?

All files were saved as .avi. I changed the file extension and it didn't change any of the videos. I haven't tried saving a new video as a .mkv or .ogm.

5. Does it make any difference if you select a different Video/Audio codec as the compressor?

6. Go to File -> File Information and copy all of the information into the post.

Video 1:

Video:
Frame size, fps (µs per frame): 1600x1200, 30.000 fps (33333 µs)
Length: 0 frames (0:00.00)
Decompressor: Internal DIB decoder ( )
Number of key frames: 0
Min/avg/max/total key frame size: (no key frames)
Min/avg/max/total delta size: (no delta frames)
Data rate:

Audio:
Sampling rate: 44100Hz
Channels: 2 (Stereo)
Sample precision: 16-bit
Compression: PCM (Uncompressed)
Layout: 27 chunks (1.49s preload)
Length: 1719893 samples (0:39.00)
Min/avg/max/total frame size: 63828/254798/262144 (6719K)
Data rate: 1411 kbps (0.01% overhead)

This doesn't make sense because it definitely has a file size and running length in VLC.

Video 2:

Video:
Frame size, fps (µs per frame): 1600x1200, 30.000 fps (33333 µs)
Length: 0 frames (0:00.00)
Decompressor: Internal DIB decoder (YUY2)
Number of key frames: 0
Min/avg/max/total key frame size: (no key frames)
Min/avg/max/total delta size: (no delta frames)
Data rate:

Audio:
Sampling rate: 44100Hz
Channels: 2 (Stereo)
Sample precision: 16-bit
Compression: PCM (Uncompressed)
Layout: 79 chunks (1.49s preload)
Length: 5137643 samples (1:56.50)
Min/avg/max/total frame size: 103340/260133/262144 (20069K)
Data rate: 1411 kbps (0.01% overhead)

I guess maybe it just recorded audio? But that doesn't make sense as there should not have been any audio.

7. When exactly does the error/problem occur? Openning the file? When you click the Save button? Partway through the save process? At the end of the save process?

Playback.

8. What is the EXACT error message? If it just brings up the debug dialog, then say so. Saying, "I got an error." means nothing to anyone.

No error message

9. What Operating system are you using?

Recorded in Windows XP, playback in Windows 7 32-bit.

Any help either saving these files or causing new ones to record properly would be great. Thanks.
