Unofficial VirtualDub Support Forums > Newbie Questions > Scene Detection Issue (i Think?)

Posted by: trackdub May 20 2014, 01:29 AM
hey everyone,

i've been using virtualdub for many years to do very simple frame-by-frame cutting of vids. suddenly i'm having an issue where when i go forward 1 frame, then back 1 frame, there are frames that were skipped when originally going forward and I'm hesitant to continue w/ my editing.

i've messed w/ the scene values (interframe/intraframe and havne't yet found a solution. thanks in advanced.

Maybe a similar problem as the one in this thread:

The problem in that thread was the use of the Xvid-codec with "B-Vop" (interframes) in combination with "Packed Bitstream".

By using the "MPEG4 Modifier"-tool to 'unpack' the bitstream, the problem seems to be resolved (thanks for the advice from dloneranger).

You can find that tool here:

first off, thanks very much for your help, i've made a little bit of progress.

I've installed 32 bit version 1.10.4 and http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubffmpeginputplugin/

If i select the xvid codec for compression prior to making edits, the behavior is unchanged. if i ignore compression options until the end and make a cut from the timeline it seems to work, but if i go back frame by frame the part i removed is still there.

My final render came out correctly, but there is definately still a problem here.

this is beyond my level of video expertise. VDub worked perfectly for me up until a few days ago when i reformatted my machine, no matter which version I use. I've never had this issue before.

If you reformatted your computer, this means automatically that you re-installed all your software, and thus also VirtualDub and video- and audio-codecs.

Selecting a codec in Video > Compression... does not have any influence on the video that is open, it is only used when you do a File > Save as AVI... to a new video.
This resulting video will be then encoded with (for exemple) the Xvid-codec.

What is important, is to know with which codec your problem-video has been encoded. Was this Xvid ?
You can verify this by opening that video in VirtualDub and then looking via File > File information...
(of course there are other tools for this, like MediaInfo)

If you did not have the problem before, it is probably due to the fact that another (version of the Xvid-)decoder is actually being used to decode your video.
Maybe there was a particular version of that decoder on your computer before you did reformat ?
Do you still have a backup of it, and can you check whether it changes behaviour of VirtualDub after installing it ?

A list of all the versions of the Xvid-codec untill now, is available here:

i had several versions of vdub saved to a disc which i dragged and dropped onto my hdd (as i've done many times in the past w/ many computers). the compression of the vids i'm using was never an issue--xvid def not used on all, but it never mattered, i always used xvid to render them out and it always worked, what's more, as you said, it isn't a factor until i'm done editing. also i'm having this issue with every video i open, it's not an isolated problem.

for the moment it seems that a vid works correctly if i first render it out w/ the xvid codec prior to making any edits, then i can bring in the new vid and the editing process behaves as expected--the frames i select are removed and i can cycle back and forth normally.

...so far
