| I am trying to load a .mov file recorded in the unusual format 853 x 480, 29.97 FPS interlaced, 16:9 aspect ratio. I need to use VirtualDub to deinterlace the file and resize it to 720 x 1280. When I try to load the file, I get an error message, "missing codec (DVC)". So, what do I need to install? The file plays correctly in QuickTime player (with combing due to the interlace, though); it plays as audio only in Windows Media Player -- but above all, I need ot open it in VirtualDub! A little later: I now have installed a bunch of plugins and get a different error message: missing codec (CDVC). |

| Looks like it's a Canopus codec There's a download on this page http://www.fourcc.org/cdvc/ But... it's really old so I would probably try their suggestion about editing a copy of the file in a hex editor first |

| OK, VirtualDub (32-bit) now opens the files following installation of the Canopus CDVC codec, which is to be found at http://www.fourcc.org/downloads/canopus-dv-18/start. The aspect ratio is wrong but that can be addressed by resizing in VirtualDub. This saves my having to run the file through a converter. (I do have AVS4YOU, which might work). As to editing the hex, that sounds iffy especially with a gigabyte file which would take a long time to load. The isntructions on the Canopus page are obscure, too: "Apparently if you edit the AVI and change the FOURCC to dvsd, it will play with these codecs too." Thje files are .mov - not sure why other than that they were downloaded from the camcorder tapes onto a Mac. And "these codecs" -- which codecs? |

| Success. I'm now converting the video (which the VirtualDub deinterlace filter identifies as 720 x 480 rather than 853 x 480) using the deinterlace filter, discard or interpolate bottom field to get 30 FPS progressive, and after that the resizing filter from 720 x 480 up to 1280 x 720 to match the format of other clips I will use in my project. Looks good, processes reasonably fast (about 25 FPS) in 32-bit VirtualDub on an Intel i5-2500 system. I am using 32-bit VirtualDub so I can run Deshaker but I'm going to try 64-bit for projects which don't need DeShaker, and see how much faster the processing goes. The problem might be that there are not input codecs for some formats including the Canopus format of these videos. |
