I have downloaded the FadeFX filter plugin, but I don't know what program to use to open it and how to get it in to Virtual Dub. The version I have is 1.9.11
Any help would be appreciated.

Bob

To install
Close virtualdub if it's open
Open the folder with virtualdub in
Open the 'plugins32' folder inside virtualdubs folder
Put the file FadeFX.vdf in there

To use
Start virtualdub
Open a video file
On the video menu select -> filters
On the new dialog box, click the 'add' button, find fadefx on the list, click on it to select it and then click the 'OK' button
You can now select the fadefx filter on the list and click the 'configure' button to edit it's settings
Click all the 'OK' buttons until you get back to virtualdubs normal screen
You're all done, the filter has been added

----------------------------------------

However there's a bit of a problem filters like this that use frame numbers
If you do any editing (deleting or adding sections of video) then you might not see the frames you expect to see being faded
That's because the filters don't know about virtualdub deleting or adding frames and work on the original frames
So if you have a 100 frame fade in at the beginning and then delete frames 50 to 200 the fade will suddenly stop at frame 50 -> you'd need to do a 250 frame fade in to get the effect you wanted, but it'd still be wrong as there would be a sudden jump in the amount of black due to the deleted bit

There's another way of doing fades, you can use a fill filter set to black, and use the blending feature to fade it in/out however you like
It's a much more flexible system and can be used with any filter at all

EDIT dloneranger is too fast, I'm basically echoing what he has said:
  • You need the 32-bit version of Virtualdub
  • Move or copy "fadefx.vdf" to <virtualdub>\plugins32,
where <virtualdub> is VD's home folder
  • Select Video, Full processing
  • Open Video, Filters
  • Add FadeFX. Open the Configure dialog.
  • Under Fade Parameters, Select Fade In from Black (for this example)
  • Leave Extend effects to other frames checked
  • Under Effect Range, apply effect from frame 1 to frame 59.
  • Hit OK to close the Configure dialog, and OK again to close the Filters dialog.
  • Now move around in your video; you will see a smooth fade from black at frame 0 to normal at frame 60.
  • To fade out, add a second FadeFX filter. This time you have to do a little arithmetic: to figure the starting frame for the effect, decide the frame at which the fade should be completely black and subtract the number of frames you want the fade to last ("normal" fades are usually 1 second; final fade-outs are usually longer)

EDIT and don't overlook dloneranger's note that begins, "However there's a bit of a problem..."

I like to use the fill filter in blend mode with the curve editor instead. You can use whatever color you want to fade to and from, you can add as many fades as you need and you can use smart rendering so that you don't have to re-encode the whole file.

Thanks, I'm gonna use curves in the future. Dragging control points is a more visual way to work, rather than typing frame numbers. Curves points stay where they belong after editing too.

EDIT here's a quick fade-to-black with Fill+Curves tutorial.
