Hi all!! I'm capturing some friends tapes with my video8 camcorder, cuz it has a TBC built in. I've captured with it before, some of my tapes, and sync was fine. I have a few tapes from a friend that gets out of sync. Starts off good, but about 1-2 hours in I notice audio is off sync with video. Usually audio sounds first then you see their lips moving

First time this happened, I changed audio raw capture format from 96000hz to 48000hz and that did the trick. This was with old VHS c tapes. Same trick hasn't worked for the hi8's.

Any ideas?

I'm running from sony handycam, thru eZcap.tv, into vdub
Settings are 48000hz and tried 44100hz

So, for some reason or another, the length of the video-track is a little bit longer than the length of the audio-track, in the recorded material.

Probably you can see and verify this, when opening that captured file in VirtualDub, and looking at the "File information...", via the File-menu.

If the off-sync goes gradually up from the start of the video towards the end, then you can try to resolve this via the Video-menu > Frame rate...

In the "Video frame rate control"-dialogbox, you will find the "Source rate adjustment"-option that you can set to "Change, so video and audio durations match".

If fact you will have to make that the video runs a little bit faster than the audio.

Give it a try...

Now the audio sync is worse and even more way off

I have been having SEVERAL problems with ezcap.tv to virtualdub recently, problems ranging from bad audio that sounds like clipping (where there's too loud/much audio for the device/soundboard to record quality clear audio) to the audio sync

I am really not superknowledgeable about how virtualdub works, can anyone give me some help about all this? I just want it to work like it did 2 months ago...where video and audio synced perfectly and all was well with the world

Hope this doesn't offend anyone, but seriously considering switching to debut, when I had a trial with them everything worked perfectly. It seems better for capture than vdub, cuz it specializes in that, whereas virtualdub has tons f options for people who know what they are doing. Thoughts? Sorry if that's blasphemy to some on this forum, but I need something that works...for me...now.

I'm sorry, I probably sounded like a high maintenance demanding jerk just then. This is just....frustrating.

So, if I understand correctly, the fps of the video capture is different than the length of audio capture? And that's cuz virtualdub captures them as two separate files. Is there a way to capture as one? Cuz the audio on te tape wouldn't be off sync, just the way it gets captured would off sync

I can understand your frustration, but it is not always as easy as it sounds.
And you should also consider that VirtualDub does not cost you a penny, nor the help that we offer to you as volonteers. We are not payed for that.

That said.

In fact when capturing to an AVI there should be normally an exact number of images per second (frames per second or fps).
In certain countries where they use the PAL-format, a number of 25 fps is expected.

Now sometimes for particular reasons, while capturing, some of these images are not recorded (dropped frames).
In most of the cases, this does not happen with audio-recording. All sound is recorded to even the last millisecond.

This makes that when you read the images sequentially - after they have recorded and while playing the file - and this at 25 images per second, you will see that the difference (desync) between video and audio grows more and more.

The AVI-format has no ability/possibility to indicate a variable speed or variable number of frames that should be played per second.
This number of frames per second is a fix number for the whole duration of the file.

Thus, the only thing that you can do (after the recording), with a little bit of chance, is to change this number (like I said before) from for example 25 to some more less or more (depending of the way that the desync is going).

The other way around, is try to avoid 'dropping frames', by using a codec that takes less resources, check that all other applications are closed and do not take cpu-time, ...

Yeah I really didn't mean to sound like that. I was in a bad mood earlier. I'm truly sorry. And thank you a ton for your help, I was never frustrated with a person...just with the situation. Thank you!!
